Description: It is an original engraved antique map in great shape with original handcoloring. It has a copyright date of 1842 printed on the map, although it is from an 1844 edition of the atlas Maps of the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, published London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. It was drawn by Phillip Smith and engraved by J. Walker as stated in the bottom margin. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) name appears in the title block. The society was formed in 1826 and committed to the publication of the most upto date scientific findings for the dispersion of knowledge to the general public. It is hand numbered in India Ink in the corner. The maps are some of the most detailed English Maps of the period. The map is being sold as seen in the main pic as a single map that is not mounted, matted or framed.
Size: The map image measures approximately 15 1/2 by 23 1/2 inches on a 16 by 24 1/2" page with a margin all around for framing.
Condition: The map is in Fair to Good condition with overall tonal ageing, blank on the reverse with original handcolor outlining and a centerfold. It was printed on two joined sheets to form the larger sheet. There is some darkening and wear around the edges as seen. There is some double creasing along the centerfold and a couple of chips out of the edges, although the paper is still very strong and pliable. The pics are very revealing of the actual condition and are of the actual map you are bidding.
