The story is told through the eyes of Hijikata Toshizo, the second in command, and in effect the group’s conscience. The film TABOO was made from one of the chapters in this novel, "The Lad With Bangs". Great history, and exciting action.
Much of the elaborate period detail and personal storylines are bypassed, making this version more an action adventure, which is more exciting because of the faster pace.
