THE GREAT DUEL (1964) - REMASTERED

Dai Satsujin - Set in the 17th Century, a Japanese Daimyo knows that there are plans for revolt, and orders the suspects to be arrested. One suspect tries to hide himself at an uninvolved friend's house. The suspect is killed, his friend is arrested with the others, and his wife is killed while resisting arrest.

The friend escapes and soon becomes involved in a plot to assassinate the province's abusive Lord. The plotters include Hira, a wealthy opposition samurai, a female ninja, a sex-obsessed monk, and a poor samurai with a large and devoted family. However, the cruel, arrogant Lord has an expert swordsman as his bodyguard.

Consequently, the desperate crew’s unraveling plan devolves into a spectacular bloodbath of repression that will serve as a wake-up call for the previously carefree samurai Hira. The unrelenting nature of the film, and the clear sense that things will not end happily is established from the opening scene.
