Seidan botan-doro – This beautifully filmed ghost story is based on one of the oldest horror tales in the World, it’s one of the most famous Kaidan in Japan.
Shinzaburo, a poor Ronin working as an umbrella maker meets Otsuya, the daughter of a wealthy and powerful Samurai, and falls head over heels for her. He visits her at home, and the father finds out. Her father scorns this courtship, and tells Shinzaburo to stay away from his daughter and his house. Both the young mistress and the Ronin are distraught, and while in her grief, she is killed by her Father for bringing shame upon their family.
A couple of nights later Otsuya visits Shinzaburo during the O-Bon festival (festival of the dead), they consummate their love, and she leaves, vanishing into the fog.
The neighbor of the Ronin warns him that the girl is a ghost, after which he takes steps to protect his house from her. When the ghost-lover Otsuya visits again, she is unable to gain entry to the house, so her maid bribes the frightened neighbors into removing the protective talismans from his house. Then one horrifying night she returns.... to take possession of his body AND his soul.
