In this humorous paean to the joys of food, the main story is about trucker Goro who rides into town like a modern Shane to help a young widow named Tampopo improve her noodle restaurant.
Over the course of the film, the story drifts around, not only following the stories of Tampopo, her son, and Goro, but also a number of customers who come through the diner, including an old woman terrorizing a shopkeeper by compulsive squeezing of the cheese at his market and a gangster who mixes hot sex with food.
Tampopo was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 1988 Independent Spirit Awards.
