UTAMARO'S WORLD (1977) - REMASTERED

Utamaro: Yume to Shiriseba - a visually sumptuous telling of the famed Japanese printmaker's life centering around the years that he was forced to make pornographic prints for a living.

Utamaro was an artist who lived in Edo in the late 18th century. This film, which has a complex and wide-ranging storyline, recreates the world of that time as it appeared in his paintings. Spanning the time that Utamaro is commissioned to produce pornographic woodblocks by his publisher because landscapes and portraits of kabuki actors are not bringing in much money.

Based on the end of Utamaro's career it follows what little is known about him.
