LIGHTNING TREE (2010)
Raiou - Prolific director Hiroki Ryuichi’s first period drama "The Lightning Tree" is "Romeo and Juliet" transposed to feudal-era Japan, with a Juliet who is a free-spirited child of nature and a Romeo who is a mentally ill young Lord living in a gilded cage.
A fresh spin on the Samurai genre by focusing on a Romeo & Juliet-like romance with a modern tone. Narimichi is the 17th son of the ruling Shogun. Although he was born into a privileged life, he’s never felt as though he fit in with his own family. Instead, he prefers the modest life of the people in the home village of his retainer Seta.
One day, he hears a rumor of a monster in the mountains. When he journeys out to see for himself, he meets a free-spirited girl named Rai. Rai was kidnapped as a child and has lived a primitive life deep in the mountains ever since. Soon, these two people with completely opposite backgrounds fall in love…
