THE CRYING WIND (2004)
Fuon - Based on a series of stories by Medoruma Shun, the film won the Innovation Award at the Montreal World Film Festival in 2004.
In a small village on the island of Okinawa. The skull of a kamikaze pilot, who was shot down in a suicide attack during the Battle of Okinawa, has been placed on a rocky ledge in a protected place near the seashore. This skull emits a crying sound when the wind whistles through a bullet hole on its side and exerts an influence on villagers and visitors.
This eerie remnant from World War II serves as the basis for two wounded souls haunted by their respective pasts; a grandfather who still regrets stealing a fountain pen from a dead kamikaze pilot, and a mother who comes to the island to get away from her abusive husband. Depicting the lives of several characters still living the pain of World War II today, the film examines the effects that remain from the Japanese imperial army and the American army's occupations of Okinawa.
Director: Yoichi Higashi
Stars: Akira Fukuhara, Fumio Haruya, Takato Hosoyamada
2004 - JAPANESE with OPTIONAL ENGLISH SUBTITLES - COLOR - FULL SCREEN - 106 MINUTES
