When gangster Eddie Kagle gets bumped off by his partner, his eternal soul gets sent to the underworld several floors below. The Devil, played superbly by Claude Rains(Casablanca, Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Lawrence of Arabia)finds great potential in this new recruit and makes a deal with the petty crook in return for his freedom from the sulphuric steam bath! It seems that Eddie looks just like a judge whose noble deeds have gotten under Satan's skin. This dark comedy made shortly after World War II also stars Paul Muni(Scarface, I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang)and Academy Award winner Anne Baxter (Razor's Edge, Ten Commandments, All About Eve).
