A professional musician since the 1930s, Stan Kenton was an accomplished pianist and noted arranger but effectively made his reputation as a band leader, beginning with the formation of his first band in 1941. It was in the fifties that he created his best known band, a nineteen piece lineup that produced music that was extremely popular yet never predictable. Both of the albums that are featured on this CD were chart hits in 1956, hitting the Top 20 at a time when America was embracing the rock and roll era. That Stan Kenton would still be making the album charts in 1972 says much for his abilities.
