It took an overtime effort to finally put away the Pirates, but the Wolverines, led by Glen Rice, eventually prevailed by a slim 80-79 margin. Glen Rice was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, as he netted 184 total tournament points in leading his Wolverines to their first national title. Both teams had to defeat two Final Four veterans, the Illinois Fightin Illini and the Duke Blue Devils to earn their shot at the national title.
