I am pleased to offer to your attention a symbolic vintage small dustpan and besom for removal of Chametz before Passover. On the surface of copper dustpan is hammered an east sage with a hookah (shisha) used for smoking. Made in Israel in 1950's. Measures of dustpan: 8 x 6 inch.
Chametz is any food or beverage that contains leavened bread as determined by Jewish law. Two basic requirements exist for chametz: it must contain barley, emmer, oats, rye or wheat and must be in contact with water for at least 18 minutes before baking. Observant Jews are prohibited from eating, owning or otherwise benefiting from chametz during Passover.
When the Jews split from Egypt, they were in a bit of a hurry. Without time to prepare, legend has it that they could only make the most basic of breads, without allowing the bread time to rise. Essentially, they ate Matzo.
In commemoration of their plight, and in celebration of their freedom, Jews eat matzo during Passover as a way of joining their ancestors both for the joy of freedom, the sadness at the losses of the Egyptians, and the pain at the conditions of the departure.
Like most religious traditions, removing Chametz before Passover is symbolic. Traditionally, Jews do a formal search for remaining chametz after nightfall on the evening before Passover. A blessing is read ("on the removal of chametz"), and one or more members of the household proceed from room to room to check that no crumbs remain in any corner.
