This is a VERY RARE and BEAUTIFUL Carcharocles ANGUSTIDENS SHARK Tooth Fossil from South Carolina. It measures 3-7/8 inches long. OUTSTANDING COLOR!!! Very ATTRACTIVE with a lot of character! Excellent preservation and Excellent Serrations! VERY NICE COLOR!!! Excellent companion piece to go along with a BIG megalodon tooth for any collection! THIS IS EXTREMELY RARE TO FIND THIS SPECIES IN THIS SIZE! YOU WILL NEVER SEE MANY OF THESE IN ANY CONDITION!

ANGUSTIDENS was an early ancestor of the Megalodon Shark. Angustidens did not grow as big as the more widely known Megalodon but it was still without a doubt THE apex predator of the Oligocene Period. We can identify this species because of the distinctive side cusps located at the edge of the tooth where the root corners meet the blade. This species is very often mistakenly identified as Carcharocles Auriculatus which is even older at about 30 to 50 million years. Angustidens usually has a flatter root but some times can be nearly impossible to distiguish from it's ancestor C. Auriculatus. Many times you have to rely upon the age of the sediment in which the specimen was found to determine the species. This tooth is estimated to be around 15 to 20 million years old based on the sediment compared to the Megalodon at a mere 3 to 10 million years. Angustidens teeth are FAR more rare than the Megalodon and high quality specimens like this one can sell for a lot of money at retail fossil shows to serious collectors. The few specimens that are found are usually broken but this one is VERY HIGH QUALITY!

This tooth was found while SCUBA diving in about 40 feet deep of some of the blackest water you can imagine! Many people do not realize that most fossil shark teeth are found in rivers and not the ocean. This is due to the fact that millions of years ago most of the Southeastern United States was under the sea where prehistoric predators such as Carcharocles Angustidens thrived by feeding on marine mammals such as whales and manatees. When the ocean receded the land we now stand on was formed. Water flowing down hill from mountains far inland created the coastal rivers we know today. These rivers have carved their way into the ancient sea beds and bays exposing the fossil layers that contain these magnificent fossilized shark's teeth.

There is a widely accepted theory in science of estimating the size of the shark by the diagonal length of its four upper front teeth. The diagonal length of a tooth is measured from the longest root corner to the tip of the tooth. This theory states that there would be approximately ten feet of shark for every one inch of tooth. This tooth measures 3-7/8 inches long which means the shark that once owned it would have been OVER 35 feet long!

This tooth is a 100% guaranteed authentic fossil in its natural state. There have been no alterations or repairs of any kind.

Fossil shark's teeth make OUTSTANDING displays because no sharks were harmed in obtaining them! Kids love them and they are highly educational!
