This is a MUSEUM QUALITY Carcharodon carcharias, better known as the GREAT WHITE SHARK Tooth Fossil from Chile, South America. It measures OVER 1-5/8 inches long which is a nice size for this species! Excellent Color!!! KILLER SHAPE!!! Very Nice Tooth! It could easily be made into a fine piece of jewelry but I think it looks just fine the way it is!

Chilean fossils are getting nearly impossible to obtain these days! This one is as good as they get.

This tooth was found in a desert, on dry land. Many people do not realize that most of the shark fossils from Chile are found in dry, arid desert conditions. This is due to the fact that millions of years ago this desert was once the sea floor. These shark teeth were covered by sand and silt from the ocean's tidal action where they laid still for millions of years and became fossilized. They literally turned to stone! Over time the ocean receded creating the desert where millions of years of wind and rain has washed away the fossil layers exposing these magnificent fossil shark teeth.

There is a widely accepted theory in science of estimating the size of the shark by the diagonal length of its four upper front teeth. The diagonal length of a tooth is measured from the longest root corner to the tip of the tooth. This theory states that there would be approximately ten feet of shark for every one inch of tooth. This tooth measures OVER 1-5/8 inches long which means the shark that once owned it would have been up to 15 feet long! Considering this theory we can also determine that the shark that once owned this tooth would have been bigger than most of the sharks we know today!
