Brandy Biography
R&B singer Brandy became a huge star in the US at the age of 15
with her debut self-titled album, before gaining international
recognition when a duet with Monica, “The Boy is Mine”, topped pop
charts worldwide.
15 year old Brandy released a debut self-titled
album in 1994. It was a slow-burner, but thanks to three Hot 100 Top 10
singles – “I Wanna Be Down”, “Baby” and “Brokenhearted” – it eventually
achieved four million US sales. In 1995 she earned two Grammy
nominations for her previous album, and “Sittin' Up in My Room”, from
the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, hit No.2. The following year
she got her own sitcom to star in: Moesha followed the
escapades of a high school student living in LA.
After the success
of that debut album, the pressure was on to repeat it with the
follow-up. Never Say Never (1998) fulfilled all her fans
expectations, earning good reviews and selling over five million in the
US. “The Boy is Mine”, a duet with Monica, topped the Hot 100 for 13
weeks, becoming one of the biggest-selling singles of the decade. It was
also the breakthrough single for both artists in overseas markets,
achieving impressive positions in charts from South America to Europe,
Asia and Australia. “Have You Ever” also topped the Hot 100, before
Brandy took a break to concentrate on her acting.
In 2001,
Brandy's version of Phil Collins' “Another Day in Paradise” (recorded
with brother Ray J) was a hit throughout Europe. Full Moon
(2002) featured a huge hit in “What About Us?”, but was otherwise
considered a disappointing third full-length. Brandy roped in Timbaland
to produce Afrodisiac (2004), and though it won good reviews it
was under-promoted and didn't sell well.
