Having scored a massive hit with their debut album,
Core,
Stone Temple Pilots returned to the same sludge-filled well for
Purple,
only to come up with an album that's harder, more concise, and filled
with thunderous, punishing riffs. Headbangers will rejoice over the
grinding guitars of "Meatplow," "Vasoline," "Lounge Fly," and "Unglued,"
but the album reveals far more than one dimension. They back off the
throttle for the hushed (though still intense) "Pretty Penny," "Big
Empty" puts a respectable spin on the phrase "power ballad," and the
catchy, hook-filled "Interstate Love Song" asserts itself as one of the
most memorable alt-rock singles of the '90s.

It all began
in 1986 when a young Scott Weiland had met a Robert DeLeo at one of the
last Black Flag concerts in California. They became friends and soon
began to make music with each other. At first, they made fake
commercials in Robert's studio, but then they became serious and made
original songs. Soon after, they formed their 2 man group band: Swing.

But having a singer who couldn't play the guitar very well and a bassist
wasn't enough.
They decided they needed a drummer and started their hunt for one. One
day, they walked in on a band in a bar. The drummer was, to say the
least, an enthusiastic drummer. In other words, he drummed so loud, it
was hard to hear the lead singer singing. The two band members were
esctatic and decided to ask him to be a part of their 2 man band. Eric
Kretz decided to give it a try and became the 3rd member or Swing.
They still weren't satisfied. They needed a lead guitarist. Having only a
bass wouldn't cut it. Robert knew of a great guitarist and called his
brother Dean back in New Jersey. Robert agreed to help and moved out to
California.
They soon changed their name from Swing to Mighty Joe Young, and signed
on with Atlantic Records on April Fool's day, 1992.
But there was a problem with their name. Mighty Joe Young was already
taken, so they had to change their name yet again. Neither band member
could think of a name.
Then one day, the group was sitting around talking about stickers. The
STP logo on Scott's bike was mentioned and they decided to make a name
from that. The Stone Temple Pilots were born and their first record Core
was released on September 29, 1992.
Stone Temple Pilots were one of the key bands of the grunge era of
alternative rock that emerged in the early 90s.
They were formed
in the late 1980s and by 1990 they had fixed their line-up (Dean DeLeo,
Robert DeLeo, Eric Kretz and Scott Weiland) and adopted the name Stone
Temple Pilots. By 1992 they had signed to Atlantic Records and released
their debut album Core which has subsequently achieved 8x
platinum sales. Singles from the album, including "Sex Type Thing",
"Plush" and "Creep" went on to become hits, though perhaps not in the
eyes of the critics who gave them something of a mauling.
Purple,
their second album, was released in 1994 and it debuted at the top of
the Billboard charts, partly as a result of the success of the hit
single "Interstate Love Song". Unfortunately in 1995 Weiland was
arrested for drug possession and the band split soon after. Disruptions
as a result of Weiland's ongoing substance abuse were to become an
ongoing issue for the band.
The break didn't last long and later
that year they started to record their third album Tiny Music...
Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop. It was released in 1996;
following the trend for STP releases, the fans loved it, the critics
didn't. The promotion of the album was not helped by Weiland's
continuing and worsening drug addiction - they weren't able to tour at
all and tolerated Weiland's involuntary stay in rehab with reluctance.
No.4
was released in 1999 spawning the hit singles "Sour Girl", "Down" and
"No Way Out". Soon after the album, Weiland went to jail for violating
probation and the next album was not released until 2001. Shangri-La
Dee Da completed the five album obligation to the record label and
the band split in 2002 after the tour for the album.
Members of
the band went on to achieve success with other bands including Army of
Anyone and Velvet Revolver but in 2008, much to the delight of dedicated
fans, the band announced a reformation, with a tour and a new album
expected later the same year.
