from Caledonia Mine, Michigan. This free form was originally in a
mineral based matrix that was chipped away to reveal the beautiful
Copper mineral with a natural sheen. Size L-12" x W-6" x D-6"
Copper is a reddish colored metal with a high electrical and
thermal conductivity. It has its characteristic color because it
reflects red and orange light and absorbs other frequencies in the
visible spectrum due to its band structure. It is in the same family as
Silver and Gold and is a malleable metal. It is beautiful natural or
polished.
Paratacamite, var. Anarakite Sometimes zinc can replace some of the
copper in paratacamite - this miniature of granular anarakite (or
zincian paratacamite) and cerussite. Dendritic floating growth, very
esthetic and aerial, with elongated crystals with some sharp faces.
The Caledonia Mine was first opened in 1863. Mining giant Calumet &
Hecla purchased it in the late 1930s, subsidized by funding in
anticipation of war. From 1950 to 1958 a government-funded pilot
project connected it with the Mass Mine and removed six million pounds
of copper.
