Dogs are omnivores and their nutritional needs can be met by either plant or animal sources. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration when selecting a diet. Reproductive status, activity level,  and environment all have an impact on nutritional needs. We offer many different diets for different life stages and differing medical conditions. The diets in this section are for adult intact or neutered, healthy dogs.

Protein

Proteins are made up of amino acids and the canine requires many different kinds and enough protein must be supplied to meet these demands. Excess protein is not stored but sent to the liver where the excess amino acids are converted to ammonia and then excreted by the kidneys. Diets should contain about 15% - 30% protein DM.

 Fat

Fat is an important source of energy and essential fatty acids. Consumption is also necessary for the absorption or fat soluble vitamins. Linoleic and linolenic acid are both required in the canine because they cannot be created in the body. These are both used in the production of the other omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Adequate intake of fatty acids is essential for a good skin and hair coat. Fat should make up at least 5% DM of the diet, and 1% should be linoleic acid.

Fiber

Fiber does not provide any energy to the diet and as the amount increases so does the energy density of the food. Whether fiber is needed in the diet is debated. Some is beneficial to gastrointestinal health and the feeling of being full. Less than 5% DM dietary fiber is adequate in the diet.

Minerals

Calcium and Phosphorus are important in bone health and must be maintained in the proper ratio. Meat is high in phosphorus and low in calcium and home cooked diets need to be supplemented with both. Bone meal is used to provide calcium and phosphorus and never should be omitted. Calcium should be provided at 0.5% - 0.8% DM and phosphorus should be provided at 0.4% - 0.6% DM.  Sodium is provided at 0.15% - 0.4% in the diet.
