I read that eBay had a huge drop in pageviews and traffic:
eBay had a 5.2 percent decline in unique visitors in March 2009
compared to the same month last year, and its page views were
down 27 percent, according to Nielsen. Meanwhile, Amazon.com had
a 17 percent increase in unique visitors to its website in March
2009,...

and wondered if eBay does any TV advertising anymore? There are lots of people who still dont know anything about ebay and especially about the use of eBay to find all sorts of unusual things like parts for vintage vehicles, nos replacements for favorite products that are no longer made, really obscure collectibles like high school yearbooks etc. I think they really have more potential customers to reach that dont have the information needed, I think a testimonials type commercial where people tell how ebay solved a significant problem for them would work well.

eBay lost the commercials when the marketing budget (and staff) was slashed.
There may be some people who've never heard of eBay but there is a far greater population who've heard of it, used it once or twice and sworn never to go back. That's the marketing challenge eBay needs to solve -- but of course the current management gang of bumbling number-crunchers doesn't see it that way.
