We are way off on sales this month. It has been really slow since Labor Day.

How's biz for you?

We haven't even hit 25% of sales we did last month. I have gotten a few offers on some larger pieces, but they were too low. I have contacted them to see if I can nudge their offers up a bit and no response.

In our business it is often hard to gauge slow months vs. strong months because of the product factor. Our stock is constantly changing so we may have some very strong items one month and then have some that are just ok.

It depends on what you sell, they are looking for gold, silver and anything which will hold its value, beats inflation and could be resold at a profit.
Besides gold and silver, prebanned ivory, coral, jade are all better than holding cash!

I should clarify that the sales recently have been auctions, very little from my store.

It's been a little slow but nothing like it was when I lost my TSR.
Plus I've had a couple of really good offers - so I'm happy.

It has been slow locally as well, about 50% slower than usual by this time of the month. In fact, early month sales for us are usually strong and taper off by the end of the month. Not to say it won't turnaround tomorrow and suddenly we are over our heads in work. I've had slow months before and then the last day of the month we exceed our average month.

We recently added an Amazon account, but are quite discouraged by the limitations it provides without dedicating yourself to being a Pro seller and pay them $40 a month + other fees.

I immediately found that I couldn't compete with other sellers without being a Pro seller. For example, I can't provide free shipping. Instead I have to offer my item for less and add shipping to match other prices. The problem with that is when you buy from certain companies they have a MAP on the price. So, I can't lower the price below the other sellers.

Second, I found that I cannot list items that aren't already on Amazon without a Pro account. That really perplexes me because you would think Amazon would want to have a new product available. I have some replacement parts that are fairly desirable (and often needed), but cannot list them on Amazon.

We have specialized in vintage for so long, but are adding some new products. Eventually it may be worth the $40 month Pro fee, but with only 20-40 items to choose from, it doesn't make sense to give away a bunch of money.

AMZN is not the same as Ebay, they dont want anyone everyone to add their one of a kind item and then forget to remove them when they are sold on other venues,AMZN is not really a venue for rare and scarce and one of a kind item.
But if you think your item will sell on AMZN,you can contact them and see if they could create a listing for you.
I have done that with books and poster books published by European publishers.
Without a pro merchant account, you have to pay 99 cents transaction fee,so if you think you can sell 40 items a month,it pretty much pay for itself.
If I sell 40 items on AMZN in one year,I will be happy, unfortunately this is not the case for me!

AMZN also have 'restricted cataegories'-electronics,toys and jewelry.
Many have applied and get turned down, then the pro merchant account sellers complain,so the last I heard it will allow them to sell toys and jewelry and electronic but not during Xmas.
How does it work ,You will have to find out from AMZN,but at least you can list those items in your shop if you have a pro merchant account, some shoppers do shop for Xmas all year round !

My total sales in dollars is up, because I sold one expensive (for me) item earlier this month, but the sales in terms of total numbers of items sold is down this month.

For the last 90 days I have sold 26%, not so good. I miss the days of 60 - 70% sell through. Oh well, it is the economy and at least I am still selling.

The antique tool business is as bad as it can get. When one does sell it is 20% to 30% of what it sold for a few years ago.
Construction tools are even worse. If this economy stays like this a couple of more years we will all be on food stamps or worse.
My sell through rate looks good at 70% but that is because I research every item and do not put anything on that is not selling.
