I buy bird seed in BIG bags. I just picked up another bag of Niger seed and started reading the bag. It came from Bangladesh which made me feel awful. Here I am buying these huge bags of food for the birds when most of these people can't even afford to feed themselves. It's no big deal but it made me realize again how lucky I am. We all are you know.

I agree we are. Imo, when people get down in the dumps...if they'd just look and focus at what they do have rather than what they don't have....they'd be a lot happier.

A friend once said, when I asked her how she was feeling, if I wake up breathing it's a good day.

Classic, you protest too much about Crowfarm, if you know what I mean.

Linda, that's so true.

In the early 1990s, we took a group of student body officers from our local university to Eastern Europe (Lithuania) and Russia. These were students from middle-class homes.

We stayed with and visited many in Lithuania and spent some time in Moscow and the countryside. The students returned home with a totally new world view, knowing how rich even the poorest of us are, compared to that part of the world. Some of them began throwing out "stuff" and stopped buying "stuff." They stopped whining for the latest gadgets. Started thinking less about things and more about the world's people.

We met Lithuanians who wept over the smallest of gifts we'd brought them--panty hose and perfume, which the women couldn't purchase except in gaudy hose colors of purple, pink, green, etc. (sent from Russia to punish the Lithuanians for something). We heard them yearning for the taste of bananas again. The U. S. dollars we gave them in small amounts could feed their family for a week. The textbooks, erasers, pens and pencils, writing paper we brought the university were hugely appreciated.

Things are better there now, thank goodness. The experience was world changing for all of us, and I've often said I wish ever high school senior, upon graduation, could spend 6 months in a third world country to know how rich he really is.

You're a sweetheart, Roadsmith. I agree that everyone should visit a 3rd world country in their lifetime. It really does change you.

I agree Roadsmith. Even the smallest of gestures is appreciated.

In 1989, I spent some time in Rio de Janiero. The country was still in transition from an overthrow of the government. When I came home I swore I would never complain about my house or car again. I took many rolls of film so my children could see how fortunate we are to live where we do. And they do believe they are fortunate.

Well, hang around America long enough and you won't have to travel to see a third world country.
