I know this is off topic (maybe we SHOULD go off topic, lol)...but I remember when my son goo'd his first vocal sounds. Gave me goosebumps and I was thrilled! Not screaming or crying (he did that from day one of course)...the first COO he did. Awesome sound, that was

He will be 3 months old in 2 days - hard to believe! He gurgles and giggles and does all that wonderful stuff now - babies are so much more fun once they start to show a little personality .

Isn't not expecting anything out of anyone a bit rude and condescending? It's like well they CAN'T act better than they are so let's just pat them on the head and smile at them and let them know we accept them just the way they are.
If I was acting rude and someone did that to me I would be insulted. I expect to be held to a high standard because I'm capable of it and I think 99% of the population is too. Not that it's my job to go around correcting people but neither is it my job to approve of bad behavior.

But I hear it all the time in different arguements. We can't expect anything out of people or you are being judgemental. You must ccept any ol thing they choose to do because otherwise you are being mean to them. I just think it's kind of condescending like they are no better than animals and therefore are only capable of so much. Expecting more would be cruel as they can't give more. Of course it is entirely possible I misunderstood this whole conversation...apologies if I did

oddish4: no, you didn't misunderstand. However, the person who made the statements originally was operating under an assumption--the assumption being that I treat the kids/adults who do this rudely in return.
