OK, I've been saying all along that my cat, Hobbes, is big. Really big. Not so much fat as simply long and heavy. Well, now that I'm actively working to lose weight, I finally bought myself a bathroom scale and was able to weigh cat and get some empirical evidence....

Would you believe 22 pounds? Now, this is the first cat I have owned since I was a child, but I don't remember any of our cats weighing anything close to that. Most, even the fat ones, weighed 15 pounds, tops.

So, am I crazy here, or is he really an unusually heavy cat? How much do your cats weigh?

Barry

I've got two adult cats, both males. One weighs 11 pounds, the other 10 pounds. The 11 pounder is light framed and the 10 pounder is small and stocky. I once had a long and lean male cat that got up to 17 pounds. My friends cat is 27 pounds but way too large - almost as wide as long. Your cat looks okay from the pictures, but you might want to ask the vet.

We have a 14 year old Siamese that is about the same size as yours. He put on weight after we got him fixed, so he has been that heavy for a long time. He always looked good, just big, until the past couple of years, when his belly has begun to sag-loss of muscle tone, I think. The new puppy should take care of that-Mike hasn't done anything but lay around and sleep since we brought the last puppy home 5 years ago!

We have one fat cat and one normal cat.
Cisco, the fat cat, is 6 kilos or approx 13 pounds. Samba is normal at about 2.5 kilos or 5.5 pounds.
Your cat looks very long. Cisco is squat; short legs, short body. Our neighbors have 2 cats which are kind of sickening. They are both OBESE!! They waddle so slowly I feel sorry for them. I tried picking one up one day after he got in a fight with cisco and he hurt my back, even though I'm in good condition. I just did not expect that much weight, I suppose I thought it would be all fur.

This is not a set up picture, btw..I walked into the living room and there he was in all his glory. 13 pounds of couch potato.

Which one? I have 5. The largest weighs 15lbs and her name is "baby". The smallest is Samantha and she weighs about 5lbs but she's also almost 20years old and has a very healthy appetite. Love the pictures and would love to see more. Cats are so much fun.
Dogs are too.

Ok, well it wasn't as difficult to get him on the scale as I thought it would be!

Mine weighs 12 lbs...Guess I can't call him 'fat boy' anymore!

Julie - I laughed when I saw your pic! Mine does the same thing and, if you walk by him while he's doing whatever he's doing there, he just looks at me the same way til I've gone away and he can resume his task.

Triggerfish: I find it's easier to weigh myself, then weigh myself while holding the cat, and subtract the difference...

Our current male cat Atticus weighs about 11 pound, and Stormie weighs about 12, and Peanut about 11 as well. Atticus is very long and lean, the girls are stubby and very fat looking.

We used to have a big fluffy male named Ranger who hit 19 pounds. With all of his hair and his large mane, he looked much larger.

Barry...

Just one OT question. I know watches are your thing, but...do you happen to know of an informational clock site, that includes some detailed info on ship's clocks? One specifically for marine clocks would be a miracle, but I'm clinging to hope. We just bought a brass ship's clock from an estate...not a Chelsea...and I need to try and date the thing, and determine how to adequately describe it for a collector.

15 year old Siamese weighs about 11 pounds. The bird keep him busy - they like to try to chase him. (don't wory he has never been caught!)

toke: You might want to check out the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors website at http://www.nawcc.org. They have a clock related message board where you can post questions and [hopefully] get answers. As long as you don't ask for an appraisal, that is.

Good luck!

toke, if Barry doesn't answer, I'll ask my husband. He has repaired clocks as a hobby for about 25 years. All of our ship's clocks have been Chelseas, but I think Seth Thomas made them also. I'll ask him tonight if he knows a website.

Thanks, Barry & saabsister.

I'll definitely check out that site...not looking for an appraisal, just info. I'll let the market set the price, though right now, that's a little scary.

I may have spoken too soon, since we haven't opened it up, yet. Maybe it's a Chelsea, and just not signed on the face. I made quite the little assumption, there. My husband has trucked it off to the shop, for further probing.

Sorry for the OT...

Thomas Joe weighs 23 lbs, which is fairly normal for a Maine Coon Cat.

drexelantiques, I looked at your pictures by cutting and pasting the URL. Try the one with all the little pictures - you've got a great cat.

Good lord! Does that cat even have legs???

Actually, when Hobbes isn't stretching out, he, too, goes into "El Blobbo" mode:

Oh he's got legs, he's just too lazy to use them half the time. That picture is actually his favorite pose, except in front of the food bowl

Hello all, gorgeous felines I must say...
My Maine Coone weighed 18lbs when we adopted
him. Had him checked by the Vet all was well,
within 3 years maintaining the same weight,
he became diabetic. He is now 12-1/2 lbs for
3 years, gets and insulin shot twice a day
and is very healthy and happy. He gets a
portioned meal twice a day. I hold back a
little so that he can have a yummy from his
Dad at our evening meal. We love this puddy
tat.

His first signs of trouble were always being
hungry but losing weight and drinking about
8 ozs of water in a 24 hours period.

He is sitting directly on some late 1800's
antique cast iron brackets helping to
sort them by size and style to put on ebay!

Bilbo looks as if he is doing a meatloaf imitation. "Meatloaf Cat"

All the pictures of our cats are on the system that is at the local computer shop getting a new mother board, processor, memory etc.
As soon as we get it back, I'll find some pics to show.

I might still have some on my MSN space...going to look now.

Found one:

What's really scary about Hobbes is that I was originally told that he was just a "cute little kitty". When I went to pick him up, though, I discovered that he hadn't been "little" since he was about 6 months old. Which, as it turns out, was the last time the person who told me about him had seen him.

I've been in shock ever since. That's the last time I agree to adopt a friend of a friend's cat, sight unseen. Fortunately, though, he really IS a cute cat. Well-tempered, too. It's just that he doesn't really fit in my one bedroom apartment, and we can't both fit on the bed at the same time....

Hobbes is definately a bit on the large size as far as cats go, but he certainly doesn't look fat. It's a good thing he has a nice temperment, I sure wouldn't want to tangle with a nasty 22 pound cat.

Barry Let me 'splain this to you...as a cat caretaker
he gets in bed you mold yourself to
whatever space is left and then don't
move until the cramps become unbearable
then you fall out of bed, stretch and lay
there for the rest of the duration!!
Right...
I mean, they NEED their sleep and we are
sworn to protect them and keep them happy!

Next time we take cisco to the vet and he makes that wise crack "Cisco, what a hanging belly you've got there" making me feel like a bad mother in the process, I'll have some amunition. 'look buddy, this guy is a barbie doll compared to what I've seen'

Zilvy is right. How dare you Barry try and take over their bed. It's nice of you to keep it warm but really you do take up too much space, and I'm sure you move too much.

I think Bilbo wins the prize.
