Perhaps we should all make a loyalty oath part of our sigs, appearing under each of our posts. This might streamline our discussions...

Until it reaches the point of questioning whether such oaths are emphatic enough, anyway...

The McCarthy era is within my lifetime, driven by the same sort of fervor that is expressed by the likes of a poster or two in here. People were destroyed, never to recover, often because of mere sneering comments and accusations like those in this thread but on a larger scale.

Oh dear, peoples lives were destroyed in a chat room?

For shame!

Or of course, as with McCarthyism, one could use a fake umbrella of patriotism to attempt to mask personal dislike for others by making silly, spurious accusations, for personal amusements or for revenge for imagined wrongs. But those tactics are quite obvious, and unlike reasoned responses, merit little attention, except as an illustration of the depths to which total self-absorption and ego enhancement might lead one.

"And that is only a tiny fraction of the damage the outside world economy causes to countries where tourism is a necessary evil. Eventually, their local government will finally say "ENOUGH!"... "

Believe me - anywhere I go I am quiet and polite to people tip well and attempt to have at least the basic phrases of the local language. If I am made to feel unwelcome i will never darken their door again with my evil damaging money. It will not require an act of local government.

Only one on my list right now - Quebec
They act as if you failed to speak French well enough as a personal insult to them, and if you can not speak it well enough to hide it being a second language you should have stayed home instead of visiting where you are not welcome. Won't make that mistake again.

Oh drat, Antiquary has seen through my fake umbrella of patriotism which I use in an attempt to mask personal dislike for others by making silly, spurious accusations, for personal amusements or for revenge for imagined wrongs.

Guess I gotta get a thicker fake umbrella.

Well, I didn't expect you to come out and actually admit it, donny. I'm still not telling anyone that your first name is really, Joe. But I've got to go do some stuff, could you please take names while I'm gone.

Oh good one, casually let slip that you'll be gone, then they won't know that you're really always here, watching for any signs of disloyalty

That's true, donny. But it really doesn't take much surveillance when people reveal themselves so easily. Not all are so clever as you.

ROLF,

Cackle is a subtle allusion to Salem, I think, toke; but that's still way up on the agenda. Donny's so impatient. But you just can't rush these things.

gravid..good for you. The majority of people respect other countries code of ethics, and I never had any doubt you were one of those

Now, France...That is a piece of work! I was born there, and spent many years there, among other places, and although I still retain emotional ties to my country of birth, I see it's faults quite clearly: the French are a terribly arrogant people, extremely chauvinistic and "me"-oriented! And when I was there last, a shop keeper ripped me off, while telling another customer about "those foreigners", and nodding in my direction ...Yes, I speak English with a French accent...sortof...(more like a French Beatle), but I speak French with an AMERICAN accent...go figure!

Now I shall go ROLL ON THE LAUGHING FLOOR with Dan.... Move over, big guy...
