I am not that familiar with Yahoo! but as of this morning, I couldn't find anything on their site discussing the Nazi ban, although a military seller e-mailed last night and said his auctions were closed by Yahoo starting on the 9th.

Any ideas anyone? Is it listed anyone on Yahoo Auctions site?

I haven't seen anything on the site, but it was on CNN a couple of days ago.

Thanks, for the note. It seems that Yahoo should have announced it somewhere on their site. Last night there were more than 1,000 Nazi listings, today there are under 500 and what's left is stamps and coins. If you were a dealer who hadn't seen the news or read it in an antique trade paper, you would sure be surprised I would think.

Connie: I strongly suspect that Yahoo's new policy was triggered by a recent court decision against Yahoo in France: Here is the AW thread discussing the subject:

Well, I'm NOT a nazi, heck, I don't even collect militaria. That being said, I am very dissapointed in Yahoos actions regarding nazi stuff.

I consider this stuff to be of a very legitimate collectable nature. Even good old "PC ebay" permits authentic nazi memorablia to be sold on their site!

The best and most efficite way to artifically glorify a concept or idealogy - is today, and has always been, to ban it...

Tyops? where?

We are running an article in AntiqueWeek nespaper on the ban and I'm doing an editorial about it. That's why I'm trying to find out if anyone, anywhere, has seen an annoucement about the ban actually on Yahoo.

If anyone sees anything let me know. Thanks!

Connie: I believe the ban was mentioned in Yahoo's press release (on January 2 ?). I don't have time to look, but check the investor relations area of the site for the press release.

I found two of my Nazi items had been CANCELLED this morning - with no warning - no word of any kind! It's one thing to have a ban - but it's another thing at least not to tell your sellers about it beforehand! I have been patiently reading alot of the comments regarding Yahoo!s new policy of charging fees. Well, I am fairly new to internet auctions - and Yahoo! for whatever reason is the one I picked to start with. It seemed to be much more user-friendly - which I surely needed being brand-new at this and all - downloading pics especially was a breeze! I think I did pretty good in November and December (my first 2 months of selling) - I may have done better on eBay (who knows). Anyway - after being "patient" and reserved regarding the new fees - I gave Yahoo! the benefit of the doubt - I thought - what the heck - I'll just stick with them a while and see what happens. Well, this is obviously JUST THE BEGINNING and I don't like what I see. They are making TOO many MAJOR changes at once! It seems they have NO concern for the sellers AT ALL!! I don't know what their agenda is - but I'm afraid - like others - this is the last straw for me. Later this evening - I plan to end all of my auction on Yahoo! and take them elsewhere - probably to eBay! Percentage wise - with eBay the last couple of weeks - I have done more with them than I did with Yahoo! in 2 months! I'm sorry to go - it's like leaving your "first" - but life goes on and changes DO occur - : (

Considering what was done to the Native Americans under the symbol of the American Flag, I consider banning Nazi regalia as a slap in the aboriginie's faces...

Thanks to the poster who said to look under Investor Relations. Now, why didn't I think to look there!

Here is the link to the Jan. 2 press release put out by Yahoo regarding the Nazi, KKK ban. You have to first find Yahoo Information Center, then click on Investor RElations.

To: Capefeartrading,

Would you be willing to share what you had listed on Yahoo that was taken off? I won't use your name, but I would like to use your information in my column in AntiqueWeek. You can e-mail me directly at [email protected]

Thanks
Connie

Apparently Yahoo officially approves of the way Native Americans were treated, since they only banned symbolism associated with with the opressive treatment of Jews and Blacks.

WELL! I just noticed another one of my auctions was cancelled! This one was NOT a nazi item(like my other 2 that were cancelled) - this one was a Schrade Walton Pocket Knife! How could THAT be offensive to anyone!!! Without really looking at the e-mail "title" - I assumed it had "ended with winner..." - because I already had a bid on it and it was due to actually end close to the time that Yahoo! so conveniently decided to cancel it!(I have the bidders name and e-mail address and if he still wants it - BY GOD - HE WILL GET IT!)!!! I sure would like to know their logic! If things like a pocket knife are offensive or dangerous or whatever - then ANYthing could be considered as such! I don't know who is up there in the Yahoo! Ivory Tower making decisions on what items should be cancelled and what items should stay - but, they are not thinking! If they are going to be banning such things as pocket knives, then I think they should get out of the auction business PERIOD! THIS STINKS!!!!

Good Lord, yahoo ended a pocket knife auction? ...whats next Ginsu Knives maybe?

capefeartrading, perhaps Yahoo now has catagorized you as a hate monger, and a vendor of evil? If so, sorry to hear that, you seem like a nice enough guy to me.

The more I hear of this, the more I think the Yahoo Auction Team has been recruted from ebay...

Well, Iucards was complaining about one of his auctions being cancelled. I looked at the auction - nothing seemed wrong with it EXCEPT it linked to his web site where he trashed Yahoo. I wasn't surprised that Yahoo cancelled the auction and didn't bother giving a reason.

Even eBah wouldn't stoopd to banning some of these things! I don't know what this dilusion is Yahoo is proceding under, but whatever it is, the stock market should and no doubt will reflect it.

Again, bear in mind, Yahoo has elected to ban things found offensive by the Jewish and Blacks, but NOT Native Americans.

Maybe Yahoo will soon constitute a hate group?

Why thank You! I think I'm a nice person! Just trying to make a living like everybody else. Maybe Yahoo! thought this "pocket-knife" was too big or something (duh!!) - but down here in the South - this is what WE call a POCKET KNIFE! It's not like a machetti (?spelling) or anything! I think if Yahoo! is going to start "critiquing" EVERYthing as to not offend ANYone - they need to tell the sellers the rules of the game! 'cause we don't know how to play anymore!

to: Capefeartrading,

In looking through Yahoo's auction terms and TOS I did find a listing about what knives are prohibited. There are restrictions on blade length and if you can open it with one hand like a switch blade. So, it seems likely that your pocketknife must have somehow fallen in this category.

AntiqueWeek will have two articles on the Yahoo auction ban in the Jan. 15 issue. One is a news story written by one of our writers, and the other is an editorial that I wrote. Any U.S. or Canadian residents who would like to see a copy of the article can e-mail me at [email protected] and I'll be happy to send you a complimentary copy of that issue.

I just had 15 of my auctions cancelled because I had the word "NAZI" in the description. Want to know what my "NAZI" items were?.........models of airplanes used by Germany during WWII!!

Bye Bye Yahoo!!

Here's the official paragraph from the new banned item list (WoW, has that list expanded for all kinds of other items):

"Any item that is directly associated with or promotes or glorifies groups, such as Nazis or the Ku Klux Klan, that are known principally for hateful and violent positions directed at others based on race or similar factors. Official government-issue stamps and coins are not prohibited under this policy. Expressive media, such as books and films, may be subject to more permissive standards as determined by Yahoo! in its sole discretion."

From the Quick reference page (examples):
Hate Materials>

Hitler Mouse Pads
Swastika Flags/Patches/Posters
KKK Patches/Belt Buckles/Hats
----------
The new rules are found (quickest way) by clicking "Guidelines" on the bottom of any page in Y! Auctions. The quick ref page is a clickable link from the guidelines page.

Well RebelGuns, I read that to mean that any hate materials with respect to Native Americans would also be banned.

I disapprove of neo-nazi stuff, but still very much approved of yahoo!'s previous hands off policy. Their fight against the French court's censorious impositions was good for freedom everywhere. I'm sorry they've determined that they had to cave in.

Should be interezting, since the American flag is symbolic of Native American opression, not to mention the images of the American presidents and generals involved in the genocide and relocation programs...

Yes, the Hitler mouse pad is stupid stuff. There needs to be a time frame criteria. Say Klan and Nazi regalia that can be documented to have been produced 20 or more years ago (in the case of the Klan) or 50 years or more (in regard to Nazi regalia). Those items fall fairly within the realm of collectibles and antiques. Not mouse pads. Sheesh.
