Bravo to Bidville and good thinking.
I'm not so sure about that.
I see the prez made to revisions to the free hosting of pictures. They are going to let you have 20 free per month, so you can stay free if you want, and this helps new time sellers.
Yup, a new seller will sign-up and list their twenty auctions. Then with a 1% sell-through rate they will, on average, make 0.2 sales each week.
but the best is letting the pictures be bigger than that 50kb. That' is going to make a big difference in pictures for me.
Bidville says that storage and bandwidth costs are the problem and then allows for larger image sizes that will use *more* storage. Bandwidth likely never really was a problem given that the auctionsite receives so few pageviews.
Sorry, but it still looks like this is about the immediate need for cash.

Bidville, in part, says:
"This update is necessary to keep up with the rising costs of image storage and bandwidth."

I cant believe I am saying this. But dimview I have to agree the chargeing for images had nothing to do with Bandwidth "That is clear" the 20 free images is a bandaid to try and stop the bleeding fall in listings. It all comes down to needing cash right now not two weeks or one month from now. So the big question is Why the need for so much cash in a short time??? anyone no the answer? I can guess but when I do people yell cry baby lol.

All this fumbling sort of makes the Bidvile leader look inept. How many other sites has he lost? at least 2 and number 3 could be 'roundin' the bend' soon.

What fumbleing are you Talking about, I see no fumbleing I see a company setting fee's for its services.
The fumbleing is the sellers who are looking for a life long free lunch and keep trying to migrate everytime they have to spend money to make money.
What you all missing here is no matter the reason they will be chargeing for more then 20 Images it is there business and they know the needs they have, if you like the dame service pay the dues if not move on pretty simple to be honest there is not always some evil plot behind ever move a service provider makes !!!!
Open your eyes people who run these online businesses are no different then you and me we all must pay for lights heat food rent and other things The internet is for the most part still just a hobby other then a few Big companies that can make it Just provideing there services and product here on the web .
everyday people with websites and services free out of there pocket can only do it so long before they put there own family and life into trouble. http://www.Dman-N-Company.com

It's amazing to me that anything any site does, gets the attack of the what evers.
Can't anybody see some good in anything that happens.
It seems that anything said has to be attacked and picked apart, and brought down.
Gads sad that this is the only way anybody wants to think.
I will continue to think that Bidville will come around to be a good alternative to a Y or and E, and will continue to work with them. Same as I still work with Y and a bit, just a tiny bit on E.
Sorry there has to be so many doom sayers on these forums.

LOL Why is it some people get so upset if someone disagrees with them. Do they real believe their answer is always the right answer? I just wish I was that perfect. I have noticed some bidville members have a shutup or packup attitude and the other members say hardly nothing "interesting".

Let me say that I have no problem at all with the three-tiers of Membership, Premier Membership and Premier Plus Membership and I believe that restricting unlimited image hosting to the Premier and Premier Plus memberships is on the right track.
Unfortunately, rather than impose the "updated" image hosting policy on *new* auctions, it is being applied retroactively on *old* auctions as well and that will leave Bidville with red X boxes on tens of thousands of *old* auctions, many of which are running on the 99 relist autopilot.
I don't see visitors being impressed with a mess like that. They want to see "pics" of the items they bid on, so Bidville will have a growing population of no-bid auctions that will be relisted over and over again.
On the issue of image hosting, I'd probably give Bidville a D; on the issue relist options, I'd definitely give Bidville an F.

Thought I'd bump this up so we can see how much more downing can be done.
My sales are picking up, and bidding is starting to happen.
Works for me

"Orlando also says he's proud that Bidville owns all of its servers and hardware, and that with a small staff of four programmers and an administrator, his costs per month are extremely low. "We have investors," he said, "but even if I had no income for the next three years this site would still be on the Web."
Hmmm. I got an email from BV about 2 weeks ago that started something like "do you have a 46% sell-through?" followed by a pitch for Premier status. I guess if more sellers had gone for that scheme they wouldn't have come up with this one. If they don't collect enough fivers off this one no telling what will be next.
Justjoan,
Dim's point about bidders being turned off by all the ads with red X boxes come Sept. is very valid. When I used to browse BV a few months ago I saw broken image links all over. I even saw them in my own ads several times and had to re-do my photos. (I was uploading direct to BV.) For the good of the site they should not delete just the pics without deleting the ads.
Surely they have some way to tell what sellers haven't signed in for months. That is where they should have cut the 99 relisters and dumped ads. I haven't browsed the site too much but I have run across 3 diff sellers who had 20+ ALL negs for never contacting winning bidders. They all still had hundreds of current ads (and probably still do). Obviously they no longer use the site so I don't think an email notice about their pics being deleted is going to make them rush over to spend time closing down ads themselves. Why would they bother when they've never bothered to contact winners & complete sales?
Yahoo has a policy that all ID's not signed in for 90 days get the boot for inactivity. Obviously they don't allow 90 day auctions but this rule applies to email & all their continuous services. A site that allows people to set up to 8 year or whatever auctions really should enforce a policy on inactive accounts to clean out dead ads wasting server space. As it stands active users must pay or find an offsite host for over 20 pics. Will all those old ads from inactive users still be there? I'm sure they will & with broken image links too.

Great post Uptoolate ! It would not be hard to imagine the site founder giving up and shutting down the site with all of the obstacles in his path.
