Cuff ... sorry, but that's my opinion based on an entire discussion. I believe you are trying to be helpful and I commend you for that, but I can almost guarantee you're going to see some further discussion on the issue with words like "how come adware worked yesterday but it's not working today?".
Best to tell the whole story
Dim ... I think the concept of "cookies" is new to a lot of folks using these sites. I have seen great delight from those who discovered software like AdWare that would eliminate the pop-ups. The problem is, most of these people (including me) have no idea of how these things work, and many of these same people have no idea that running the software is only a temporary fix. I can foresee more of those "thank you" posts coming, only with a little more sarcasm when these people realise that "He" didn't really do anything to get rid of the problem ... it's still there!

Suffice it to say that if that person (who you so boldly insulted the intelligence level of) has a problem, then I don't think you should concern yourself with it. Again,
you are bringing another site's issues to this board along with insults to people who are not here to defend themselves.
I respectfully request AGAIN that an impartial Moderator address the issue of insults and innuendos in this thread.

TOPIC: If you find say 60 components in your registry with Ad-Aware and clean them up, followed by regular maintence to re-clean you will have fewer problems, and fewer components.

OK folks,
First, please do NOT bring issues from another board here - it is not allowed here, period.
Secondly, refrain from taking jabs at each other - this goes for all of you - I cannot moderate based on innuendos from occurences at another message board. What I can do, is ask that you all adhere to the Community Guidelines here, and please, one final time, address the TOPIC and refrain from making comments to each other.

Cuff ... agreed, but as I stated before, I have no way of correcting misinformation or incomplete information that may have been posted elsewhere. I'm learning from this thread the same way you are ... if I were you, I would share my new found knowledge with those folks who would be happy to receive it.
I am trying to be careful in not making a specific reference to another site, but that is almost impossible in this thread - we all know what we're referring to here.
I will happily accept and abide by the ruling of the Moderator though

You visit a website and the source code on their webpages executes, causing a cookie to be written to your hard drive. Once written, cookies are rather innocuous. They are text files and sit there simply recording information.
Software like Ad-Aware checks your hard drive for cookies and the registry for entries, then allows you to remove them.
But revisit the website and the source code is again executed and a replacement cookie is written to your hard drive.
You have really gained very little by repetitively running Ad-Aware.
If you look at the instrusive source code snipet (javascript) as being a "virus," then you can see that it is now possible to stop the cookie from being written, and stop the pop-up from ever launching.
Just as McAfee Anti-Virus has updated DAT files each month, this software would also need updated signature files. It looks like Lavasoft is trying to accomplish this with Ad-Aware Plus.
typos.

*** UPDATE ***
There still seems to be a lot of rumbling going on at BV about the proliferation of pop-ups. There were lots of those big happy faces when the AdWare suggestion was made, but they have changed to big sad faces now. It seems that many folks are not aware of the fact that the cookies or whatever are added to their system everytime they visit the site regardless of what software they have run to prevent this. Even a lurker like me is seeing these on BV on a much higher frequency than any other site. I am happy to report that I haven't seen any more porn pop-ups since I reported them the 2nd time though, which is great.
To compound the "spy cam" pop-up problem (personally, I think the Capital One pop-ups are much more intrusive), there are now complaints about "mirror" site icons and full page pop-ups loading from BV that totally lock up the user's system. Many BV users have threatened to leave the site if this keeps up, as they believe the proliferation of these irritants is turning off potential bidders.
In spite of begging for answers and help, the word from "Him" is ... nothing
There are even those who want to start a "let's write our Congressman" campaign to get this type of activity outlawed!
Dim ... have you checked their source code lately? I wonder if there have been more changes made that could be causing such grief?
