To Our Community:

To allow our users greater freedom in posting messages and interacting with others in the AuctionWatch message center, we have decided to transition to an unmoderated format effective November 1. In order to allow our users to maintain anonymity when posting, but prevent abuse of the message center, we will require that all users who wish to post within the message center provide a credit card for positive identification to our customer service representatives. Although the forums will not be actively moderated, we reserve the right to delete messages that violate our Terms of Use. Customer Service will still monitor and respond to customer service related questions in the AuctionWatch Services Forum.

Message center posting will continue to be free - credit cards will not be charged for message center use and all data will remain private. We will continue to allow users to read the message center without any registration requirements. Please visit our privacy policy if you have any questions about the use and protection data.

We would also like to thank our wonderful Moderator staff, Pat, Joice, Michelle, Marty, Sara, and Smitty, for their assistance in building and maintaining our Community over the past few years. We couldn’t have asked for a better moderator team!

Regards,

The AuctionWatch Staff

I'm suppose it will be one ID per CC verification. At least the boards will remain open. The stated reason of allowing great freedom sounds more like a smoke screen for we have to reduce personnel and costs though.

This is perhaps the best announcement I have ever heard on AuctionWatch. And it happens to coincide with the BV verification debacle. I love life.

Oh, by the way - I won't be getting verified, thanks.

....what will all the bashers with daily ID changes do now? Hehehe.

AW - Does this mean we have to again provide a credit card verification, if we already have one on file for monthly payment? Or are those who have a credit card on file, already set up for continued Message center use?

nanntique,

It's my understanding that if you already have a card on file your posting privileges will remain intact.

Where does one plugin the number? Under My Account for auction manager or is there a separate place just for the forums?

Hmm... less service and pay you with financial information and you still lock and limit under terms of use. Mmmm...don't think so.

gmileske,

I don't know the answer to that. You could ask in the Services forum.

Well this place may as well turn into a Bidville Party. Those of us who were not going to give the Prez our CC number are certainly not going to give it here.

Don't matter to me. I have a wallet full of plastic. It could mean a cleaner environment.

Speak for yourself auctionsoldier!
I don't have a problem giving AW my CC but it would be a cold day in July before Ed ever gets it.

AW said they were still going to enforce the TOS so when a troll gets bounced now he isn't going to come back instantly unless he has a wallet full of plastic. I'm not sure how the CC verification will work. What if a fictious character named Larry Lynch has 8 different credit cards with the name Larry Lynch on them, can he open 8 different AW accounts?

Well, once folks leave AW, due to this CC requirment to post, how on earth will we find out about these smaller auction sites?

Few of these start up sites advertise. I think every smaller site I have found have been through some mention here on AW.

Interesting... I wrote this in response to this thread but it posted in another. Strange. Anyway, here it is.

Rusty...
Don't think you could ever find out about the other sites on this board, but you were able to gather names of the newer ones and investigate them yourselves. There will still be the people who verify because they just have to come here to "advertize" their favorite site or bash the ones they hate.

Stay tuned.....

Do you have to be verified to "read" the boards

Anyone will be able to read the AW boards for free ( unlike Bidville ).

Bidsbids
you have to keep sharp eye on those constant revisions of BV policy. When I last looked they had changed from you must be verified to access Community to you must be verified to post to Community. Unless it changes yet again you can lurk but you'll have to pay to have a voice there. New policy also states if you do post your internet provider and IP address will be publicly displayed next to your id.

Thanks kasmoon, you're right. New members can view the cliques in session after all.

Rustybore:

I agree. There have been several attempts in the last few days to match AW message board, and so far, a new place on friday came up with a very decent one.

I plan to go over there when Nov. 1 rolls around and they have a section just for alternate auction sites.

YourDesigns - would you email me the location of the place you are talking about. I'm looking for a genuine alternative and haven't found anything up to scratch yet.

TIA,
Kim

kasmoon,

Is that true? Your IP addy will be displayed with your post???

I was trying to tell bidvillians that the logging of IPs with the User ID was a violation of the privacy policy the other night and got poo poo'd.

Now you are saying that information will be visible to all????????

After re-reading about 10 times I think I misinterpreted
"public" and I apologize for any confusion.
The literal from BV's announcement board says:

"You may notice that your IP address and Host Name are being displayed
when you post to the message boards."

That's where I got confused, the next paragraph states:

"Everyone should be aware that these addresses have ALWAYS been
recorded with every post since the message boards opened. The only
change is that we now display the addresses to the member posting
the message."

So I think it means only you can see your IP display.

Toollady .. your computer IP address and ISP # and name are only visible to the poster before they long on as a reminder that they are being logged in and trackable.
I have a very paranoid relative that refuses to to let any website see her true data and she uses safeweb.com and cruises the web with that. No cost or software download but she says it is a bit slower with a banner ad strip on top.

kasmoon and eddynurse,

Okay, I knew when I made a post to Bidville the other night, it showed my IP and my computer ID the other to me just before I hit submit.

The problem that I had was, that according to the user agreement/privacy policy, that it was for demographic purposes only.

Now, the rules have been changed to say the ID and the IP will be tied together. This is NOT good as it encourages spam, especially when a site is using a third party adserver.

This is totally OT to this particular thread, but I felt I needed for it to be said.

You can use safeweb.com and they won't get any valid info according to may paranoid relative. Try it out.

Every message board usually logs and tracks IP addresses, even AW does it. It's their choice whether to display it.

IMHO, it should NOT be displayed for the world to see. If the sites need that info for tracking problems, so be it, and I will agree to that. However to allow EVERYONE to know my ip just for causual posting is unacceptable.

I'm surprised nobody has asked that one simple question--- *why*?

Downsizing maybe? That wouldn't surprise me considering the bleak recession the net is and has been in for some time now.

Moderators here remind me more of teachers than cops-- I'm a good 20 years distant from school, but I remember messing up & being scolded (about a million times LOL), we didn't like it but at the same time we grew to know and respect the teachers as *people*, so with that thought in mind I hope the Moderators, Pat, Joice, Michelle, Marty, Sara, and Smitty, have been merely re-assigned within AW, and if not I wish them the very best of luck in whatever endeavors they choose to explore in the future.
