I am fed up with Ebay, they closed my account w/out warning. Any suggestions for a better auction site than Ebay? Or comparable.

If you are wanting another site with comparable overall sell-through, I believe you are out of luck. Now if you are willing to accept significantly lesser sales while establishing yourself on a new site, I would recommend Yahoo. Overall, better sell-through than the no listing fee sites and the fees are significantly lower than Ebay.

Another option may be to look for a niche site for your items. There are some niche sites dedicated to specific collectibles or types of items that are having some decent success.

stavecards is right, nobody is bigger than ebay. Nobody can rival their sell through rate. Try Yahoo, they do pretty well.

If you sell specialized items do try the niche auction sites route. If you sell general items then Yahoo may be your best bet. After that are many general items third tier sites with very small sell-through rates and very little bidder traffic.

LWunder,

If you have steady customers that trust doing business witn you, you can go anywhere. I sell at Bidville.com and do very well. But there are some that will be quick to tell you not everyone does as well.

LWunder, JimHow sometimes forgets to mention that he almost always uses the 30 day auction duration at Bidville.
That is a very good way to run an internet store for only $5 month if you have a lot of loyal eBay buyers that will go to the site. As an option, you can set all items with Buy It Now prices and your eBay buyers can just tell you which item number(s) they want and then you can close the auction(s). There would be no need for them to register at the auction site. Any additional sales from registered Bidville buyers would be a bonus.

Try Bargainandhaggle.com and sellyouritem.com too.
After ebay the drop in traffic is incredible. Unless you sell very nice items at $1 start bids with no reserves the average third tier auction item is very lucky to get one bid yet alone multiple bids. Heck, pageviews are even hard to come by.

Pre-emptive strike on JimHow ...

Great thanks for the info! Yes Ebay made me leave with there incredible listing fee's. Most of my items that I sell are under 10 dollars. So ebay is usually killing me with fee's

bidsbids,

Please note that in my response I mentioned Bidville as the place I list. However I suggested to the question that, "you could go anywhere".

Also, if you actually visited my auctions, you might notice that not only do I use the 30 day format to advantage, I also feature most everything. Which, if you were knowledgable about Bidville, you would know that cannot be done for $5.00 per month.

Further, you might note that I am an active preimer gold member, which also entails more than $5.00 per month.

My point, which I have maintained all along, is that, if you can sell, you can sell anywhere. Hell, in January of '01, I was at Pootah before Bidville, and was even starting to get a few people to come there.

I liken it to fishing. In my younger days, I tried fishing for several years. I fished stocked ponds, lakes streams and rivers. Never caught a damn thing.

People all around me were catching fish all day long. But I might as well have been writnig a book, never even caught one fish. Finally, one day, I hooked something while fishing the Robideaux river outside of Waynesville, in MO. after a bit of a struggle, I landed an old Army boot. Well, I had had it with fishing, I walked to my station wagon, pulled all my rods and tackle out and tossed every last bit in the Robideaux. It's still all there for all I know.

I have decided that some people can fish, and some people can sell, I sell.

I see a lot of people saying they want an auction site to bring them customers. Well, selling is getting the customers to your auctions, and keep them coming back.

check my auctions, right now, I have 49 listed. I don't think there are seven of them without bids, and at least 4 of them are 'HOT'.

There is a big secret to sales, that I have learned from years of experience, and costly sales seminars and courses. Maybe I should just write that and sell it. The problem is I have given it away for free so many times in the past year that I have come to the conclusion that if people don't pay something for it, they don't think it is worth anything.

I tried looking you up on Bidville, but it says user not found? I bet it does cost alot more to be a premimer member. Seems like when I look at Yahoo compared to Bidville there is more stuff bid on???? I just put a few things on Yahoo though and nothing was bid on
That is a good sales tatic also, whatever you selling if you have a good product people will follow. I looked at Ubid also not alot being bid on either?

As you'll see, I get plenty of action. But not everyone does. Those that are working at it are seeing improvement. And I can give you the names of other sellers who have seen steady improvement if you email me.

I think you are missing the point jimhhow is making in this thread. If you work it hard and smart it doesn't matter where you sell. Your customer base will follow you.

jimhhow

Your sellthrough is truely incredible for BV. Just out of curiosity though. What is the percentage of items that you sell at $1?

Edited to add: Do you currently sell on any other auction sites besides Bidville?

If you sell specialized items such as glassware or first edition books for instance and have done so for a while then you may have a customer base than may follow you. If use sell general items a customer base is much more difficult to acquire without using a lot of near-spam emails to keep in touch.

Kodi!! You patch that Igloo with ice dammit. Hap!! I have to agree. I believe you could sell ice to an Eskimo. LOL!!!
bidsbids!! Howdy!!

To the person looking for a new place to sell. My advice would be to try them all. It isn't a good idea to put all of your egg's in one basket anyhow.

If a person offers good service and reasonable prices. They will always sell something all of the time. Hap might start his item's at a dollar. But very seldom does it sell for a dollar. I could kick myself royally in the @$$. Hap had a mustard jar that I wanted. The dab burn thing sat for days at $28.75. I went ahead and put a $40.00 proxy bid on it. Duh!! Then I forgot about it. It finally sold for $40.25.
I would have bid as high as $75.00. But shoot far & apple butter. A person can't win everything. LOL!!! See ya'll, Hillbilly

I am going to try some hotmail stuff here. Bet it don't work. Lets see bold lettering.

Excellent advice Carlton, er Hillbilly rather. Try a bunch of them ( although I suggest everyone to try avoiding AucttionDiner ) and don't place all of your eggs in one basket or you may be scrambling to find a new site if your basket ceases to exist.
Oh yes, a proxy bid is used to place the highest bid that you are willing to make and then you can safely tell your inner self that you did all that you could or would have done. Shame on you for the oversight HB ( it's ok, we all do the same exact thing ).
There was a recent thread in the ebay Outlook forum about italics and bold message boards quirks. One poster revealed that she discovered that using the ENTER key turned off the italics and bold functions after the user selects either the bracketed i or bracketed b command. If you can reframe from hittin' the old enter key the i & b functions should work.
Congrats on the new grand daddy status. I hope your grandkids aren't all dogs ( that oughtta confuse those that do not know that your daschshund had his way with the neighbor's dog ).

bgrice - I have to say buysellwhatever is one of the most unattractive sites I've seen in a while.

Still what would be the benefit of getting a $20 credit to list there when I can list all I want at Carnaby and SYI and the like and not get charged at all?

Maybe the credits are for extra stuff like featuring and bold and the like. I think www.topnotchauctions.com and a few other auctions may do the same thing.
