Libra - How do you think the military personal will like what he said?
Oh...about the same way they like him calling them cowards. And about the same way they feel about the lack of support for what their missions are from the anti-war groups.
Our Armed Forces are a proud group...who realize that part of what they're fighting for is the freedom to allow the loonie-lefties speak out against them and our government.
But that doesn't mean they appreciate what they say....or that they get the feeling the 'left' supports them..as they always CLAIM.
Actions speak louder than words. The anti-war left offer their 'words' of support...but then say they don't support their missions. yea....right.

Linda, Maher is NOT anti-military. He's about using the military effectively, which he isn't seeing. You make it sound like if someone isn't far right in their thinking, which includes total support for Bush and his war plans, they have no right to speak without being labeled as anti-whatever. How narrow-minded Linda.

::He's encouraging our young in other ways.::
You mean like recruiters taking kids out to purchase products that will assist them in passing the drug test after the potential recruit admits to drug usage, showing them how to falsify school records and where to obtain false ID?
This does not come from some "hippy flower child" or the New York Times Linda. It's on tape. A Teenage investigative reporter went in and got his whole experience on video. Why do you think they had the stand down last week? The reports of this type have been widespread and last week was about get the recruiters in line. Just because you have not personally witnessed something does not mean it is not reality linda, the tape has been aired on many news outlets.
Kids are not being dicouraged from enlisting by anything other than reality and their own common sense.
As for Mahers comments. To say they are treasonous or as LIbra claims, beyond the scope of freddom of speech, is a prime example of just how brain washed some people have become. Do you honestly feel that the only way that there will be undying support for this war is by washing the airwaves of anything else? If so, doesn't that tell you there is a problem with the concept?

[i]Encouraging young people to protect their nation is a far cry from deliberately using them and sending them off to a war based on lies......the war in Iraq has nothing to do with protecting the US[i].
Well...see kiara...there you are. The problem being that not all American's see this issue the same way YOU do. We see that saddam had been an ongoing threat to this nation for years. And when anyone who is willing to have an open mind looks back to the past THREE administrations...they can see they all felt the same....they saw the same threat. clinton too. read some of his speeches to our Nation. It's just you hardcore lefties want to keep repeating the same thing over and over and over again....because THIS President took action that was also taken back in 1990-1991.
You're refusal to put any blame on saddam's lack of cooperation with the UN...is laughable.
And I wasn't just using Bill Maher's comments on the Army as being close to the truth, I was referring to his whole routine.......much of it is also satire.
Well....take a seat, kiara, as I've watched him a time or two [SHOCK] and when he called them cowards...it was in a setting with other lefties in chairs sitting in a circle....having a discussion. They weren't joking about anything - they were complaining about what they didn't like on several issues...this being one of them. Not at all what anyone would consider him doing a 'monolog'.

Personally - I'm not even sure why all the furur over this one. Isn't it simply a statement of fact? Lets'd use Lindas very own definition of Low Lying Fruit which coincidentally was posted just last week.
I've heard that phrase used before in business. As it says...refers to 'what's easily obtained
How is it treasonsous or evil or horrendous for someone to state that the supply of easy recruits has dried up? Especially when the numbers are clearly showing this statement to be true. Is the thruth now treasonous?

Not that I have to explain to you, but I'm thanking fenix for her comments on this. About the Army comment it seems like a joke to me because I think he was talking about the Army not making their recruiting quota for months in a roll because of lack of support for the Bush Iraq war.
Linda_K we all know some WACKO Bush supporters like you would love to silence Bush's opposition across the board. I remember your post about National Public Radio. Guess what old woman while you and other WACKO republicans are attacking Public Radio its not going anywhere.

Sorry about the large copy but I needed it all.
If you remember last week DBL posted a thread with current catch phrases. In her post she said that one that she did not get was "Low Lying Fruit". You explained to her that you had heard the quote and what it meant. Your quote from that thread is what I posted here.
Why I tied the two together is that you seem to be quite offended by Maher stating that there was no more low lying fruit to be had but using your own definition of the phrase and the current recruiting problems, it seem to be an accurate statement. Hardly worthy of the repeal of freedom of speech as Libra has endorsed.

If going to assume that you are not splitting hairs on terminology and that very clear implications that it is not will suffice...
If so...
Reports from who, kiara?
Some anti-war flower child from the 60's?
~~~~~~
LOL...yep...the good ol' NYT...who just promised to STOP using so many annoynmous sourses...use two in this article alone.
Then the article starts out with "there have been several reported cases"....but doesn't even mention by WHOM?
And it looks to me like, contrary to what you and the NYT [known for all the false reports it's made in the past] are again trying to make this look different than how it really is.
~~~~~~
But it takes a lot of time, money and manpower to constantly be investigating the zillions of accusations/allegations/etc that our own countrymen are using for their anti-war, anti-military agendas.
~~~~~~
Whether or not you meant it to, the ongoing theme of these comments is that you did not believe the statements and thought that they were merely anti-war accusations.
you know...just like when animals are under a fruit-bearing tree...the lowest branches [fruit] on the tree are the easiest for them to reach. Now...the giraffes..they can easily reach the fruit from the middle and top of the tree - without a struggle.
To the 80% here that agree with Bill Maher how would you like your young men and women called "low lying fruit" and, We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies." He is a comedian, but he is still held up to the same standards as everyone else. He gets no exemptions.
But of course Kiara you can applaude him as you are from Canada and I am sure the Canadian comedians would never say anything like that.
I for one would call for his removal from HBO and any other station. I did with other statements that he has made and of course it was not because of me he lost his last job but I surely did complain probably along with many other to the station about his words about the military and he was taken off the air.
I wonder what Mr. and Mrs. Tillman thought about those words. I bet they just laughed and laughed and laughed.
Question for you bigpeepa, that is if you would answer it. How would you like your highly educated son be called that?
Bill Maher opens his stupid big yap again
By: tankertodd · Section: Diaries
Bill Maher once again sticks his foot in it.
For all the stupid junk Maher says (clearly from reading too much NYT) I don't have such a problem with his assertion that the low-hanging fruit has been recruited. Obviously, when the military is reviled in much of the country, you end up with shortages of troops. Hard to come up with quality officers when elitist Ivy League colleges refuse to permit ROTC recruiting on campus. (Better to let those dumb slouch hicks go fight our wars, right?) Add to that an environment where the Army is accused of covering up fratricide and ordering dumb Lyndie England to "torture" soldiers, no wonder recruiting is challenged.
So strangely, Bill Maher complains about the very problem he has helped create. How ironic. Perhaps if he showed any clue about what maintains the freedom to talk like an idiot and get paid millions to do it, he might show enough respect for soldiers to actually encourage his flag-burning audience to sign up, pick up a rifle, and make some use of their sorry lives. He deeply respects the military because he builds his career upon their spilled guts. Gee, thanks Bill!
When they returned and continued with their opinions I'd sure have a lot more respect for them and their ideas.
Unfortunately it is out of fashion for today's liberals to cease being part of the problem and start being part of the solution.
Bill Maher's comments are just being used by some of you to make a huge deal over as you sit with the reality that the war in Iraq is a total farce and that young men and women are being sent to their deaths, sometimes without proper equipment and with poor planning from the start. What's worse........ his single comment or the lack of planning, equipment and protection that is killing the troops? Think about it.
Approx. 40,000 Americans die each year in car accidents. The lives that have been lost...were for a reason...and in addition to that FACT we're FREED TWO countries.
Not that anything positive that comes out of a situation YOU don't agree matters one bit. But I bet freedom matters a LOT to the 25 million citizens in Iraq who are now free.
So sue me.
I had seen the phrase used in business - easily reached. Maher's comment was meant to imply scraping the bottom of the barrel while insulting those who have already enlisted ...and now what?
Well...the now what is just what they're starting to do. Reach for that middle and upper part of the 'trees' by offering better enlistment programs. Which our military should have had years and years ago. They paid terrible wages...now they're offering better bonus' etc. They're reaching HIGHER, not LOWER has Maher has implied.
