What is the worst TV commercial that gets on your nerves?

I cant stand that commercial for focus factor...

If any body's seen it, I can't stomach when that lady says, Free? They let you try it free? It must be good! (Maybe because I know how those 800 call-ins work and they're anything but free involved. But I feel like I just want to slice her head off when I hear her voice saying that.) Could you get more yokel? And where is the sense in that statement?

Guess the thing with advertising is they don't care if you like it, or hate it, just that you remember it. And that doubly pisses me off about that one.
.

End of rant

yeah yeah blah blah spelling edit corrections

The thing that really gets on my nerves is when you have ten minutes of programming and five minutes of commercials. Lost is one TV show that is more commercials than show. Remember when commercials were one or two minutes then the show was back on? No more. Must be the high dollar figures the actors are making now!

I dislike most commercials. The only ones I find tolerable are the Target commercials. They're entertaining.

Yes Cheryl. And they've figured out to run them all at the same time to stop channel surfing. <which doesnt make a whole lotta sense to me> as if the 8 minutes of commercials I will flip and maybe stay catched onto something else. But the same commercial is running in every time slot on every station practically.

thats why I have my Tivo. When I watch "24" off the hard drive from the Tivo, I can fast forward the hard drive and go thru 5 minutes of commericals in less then 3 seconds.
there was also one commerical and the product I believe started with an E for erection disfunctional with some goofy guy playing golf.

The commercial I hate the most is the Lamosil (sp?) commercial where that little fungus guy lifts up the toenail. Oh I just cringe when I see it! Grosssss! And then, just last week my doctor's nurse gives my wife some Lamosil pens--and that little fungus guy is on them!! Arghhhh!!!

I hate that commercial, too. It gives me the willies each time that little fungus guy lifts the toenail. It's almost like I can feel it. Ken laughs because I have to hide my face.

Cheryl---my wife laughs at me too because I also have to hide my face. Oooh, gives me the creeps just thinking about it. A friend of ours (who the kids call Uncle John) was just prescribed that stuff and his insurance doesn't pay--costs him about $300 per month. With my insurance it would cost $25. When my wife showed the kids the pens she got my 3 year old son said--"That's the man who lives in Uncle John's toe"!!

dbl, I watch maybe 3 hours of TeeVee a week, but I can tell you this for certain, Tivo tracks the programs you watch, but only under certain conditions and only if you use certain rating features. It's innocuous, believe me. I checked it out thoroughly before signing up.

I'm with classic on this one. Tivo is what TeeVee is supposed to be.

What commercials??

on the good commercial front....

I think it is a Desanti water with the guy in the bear suit... "You know what's in that spring... Salmon... and they're ...SPAWNING.... Waaaaayyyy too natural for me!.

The HP photo printer commercial that does does the damn near seamless interaction between video and still images.

The baby elephant tap dancing to Singing in the Rainin the GE commercial.

All time favorite though.... Mexican Maxi-pad commercial with two girls on a bridge watching as to guys come canooing down the stream the bridge is over. Girld share a sly look then on drops a maxi-pad off the bridge which soaks up all the water and leaves the boys stuck in the dry stream bed below. I love that commercial!

ok profes. I thought I had read somewhere, a long time ago, that they upload your data, sort of like a nielsons rating thing. It probably is innocuous at best anyway. I should get one, but I still havent gotten a DVD player!!! (except on the computer.) I may be one of the few people left that actually likes to go to the movies rather than rent them at home.

profe-I thought db was kidding when she said tivo was tracking what I watch.I know when I got the unit there was this big blue booklet with all the features in it.I skimmed thru it,but from what I gathered was-it did keep track so it can suggest what other programs you might want to watch-i.e.if I was watching "all in the family" a comedy,it might suggest "threes company".Other then that,I see no reason for it to keep track of what you are watching-no commerical value for them from what I could see.The one thing I dont like is that it does record programs that I dont ask for.In other words if I find a movie I want to record on the hard drive and a couple of days later I switch to the page where it has all the programs the hard drive has saved,I will see a bunch of programs other then the movie I want that I didnt want to record and then I have to go and delete them all, which is annoying.

I completely forgot about the HP and GE commercials. Excellent commercials. The HP one is just great to watch. It's hard to tell what's a photo and what's not.

prof and classic

We've been toying with the idea of getting Tivo. It was an option with our dish TV. Sounds like it might be worth it.

I do not know how I watched TV before Tivo. I can skip past all of the commericials with the 30 second skip button. Of course when I am on the treadmill I can't skip the commericals. That would be cheating..

ReplayTV is an infinitely superior pvr. Tivo is the Fisher-Price of PVRs.

cheryl-I have Directv-the good thing is I got the receiver and tivo in one box.Its also only $4.99 a month-I think if you get the tivo with cable its $9.99 a month.
desquirrel-I checked out the replaytv.com website-that is a nice unit-that one with the 320 hour drive is a couch potatoes dream.I dont watch a lot of tv-mostly the history channel or movie channels-the thing I like about mine is
it has the tivo unit with the directv reciever
so I only have one box.

I don't think ReplayTV is an option with satellite. It's Tivo or nuthin'. I don't watch enough to make a valid comparison anyhow.

DirecTivo is extinct. Direct has not renewed the contract and are sourcing their own PVR from the UK. Support continues through 2006.

Replay and Standalone Tivo both work fine with sat boxes.

Major differences:

1) Replay uses a better encoder and has a better picture at comparable record times. Slowest mode on a Replay uses variable bit encoding, which allows this mode to be more useful.

2) Easy user drive upgrade. You could have an 800hr Replay if you want.

3) Vastly better networking. No "options" needed. All the Replays on a network can stream their programs to each other w/o waiting for a show to copy over to the other unit. You can watch a show in the kitchen and resume where you left off in the den. Your PC can emulate a Replay and watch shows on all the other Replays. You can copy or move shows to the pc and store them or burn to DVD. >70% of Replay owners have more than 1. I have 6, all networked.

4) Much better menu/show navigation. Instead of hacking a Tivo to get a 30sec skip, you can skip xx minutes ahead or behind instantly. You can go to the XX minute into the show or XX minutes from the end of the show instantly. I frequently fall asleep watching TV, so when I wake, I'll hit 22 skip and be at the 22nd minute of the show instantly. You go to chunks of the menus instantly. If you have a hundred shows, you can hit 1 upch and be at the first group of 7 instantly.

5) No pop up ads and Replay does not collect viewer info.

6) Replay 4XXX and 50XX skip commercials automatically (no user intervention req., 55XX skip commercials manually (when a commercial starts you have to hit a key and it will skip them.)

7) Tivo has a much better "To-do" list, but pc software (DVArchive) blows Tivo away with the ability to see ALL Replays on the Network, what they will record, conflicts, etc.

8) Web interface allows me to access all my Replays from work, schedule recordings, copy files to the PC so I can burn them when I get home, etc.

9) Replay 4K and 5K units can share shows over the Internet. See poopli.com If you miss a show, you can request it from another Replay owner. He sends it to you and it downloads to one of your Replays. Poopli is the main site where 6500 owners meet and share shows. There are show databases listing the shows on everyone's Replay that you can request. You can make special requests, etc. There are also other groups (Yahoo Replay share, etc), but Poopli is the biggie.

10) Component outs (5K).

If you're the type with a standard VCR with the clock blinking 12:00, Tivo or the cable company DVR is fine. If you like the features above they become indispensible. That's why Replays are rarely replaced by cable company or sat company DVRs.

DNNA should come out with an HD Replay within a year. There is no real rush as the public is underwhelmed by HD or at least underwhelmed at what you get for the cost. (WOW, The Simpsons in HD!!!!!) Most sales are to sports nuts.

When you buy, make sure you get an HDTV, not HDTV "ready", and make sure it has a cablecard slot. Otherwise, it is just like flushing $$ down the john.

HD costs a small fortune. It is not just the TV. Then you have to get digital cable for $10-$12/mo. and rent converters for all of your tvs and recording devices in the house. So far most of digital cable is to give you 200 shopping channels and 300 PPV channels, all of which the cable companies make a fortune on.

Oddly in buying most HDTVs you wind up with a MUCH poorer SD picture. The reason is that in cost cutting, the mfg are elimating all of the fancy comb filters and picture enhancing circuits built into current SD sets. So you spend a fortune and get a poorer picture on 70% of what you watch.

Your recorder choices are the cable supplied units, which are pretty lame so far in features, SD Replay or Tivo, both of which will produce a good picture on many HDTVs, and future HD PVRs.

Tivo is in desperate condition, but someone will probably buy out the software and guide service and market them to mfgs. ie: Pioneer PVR with Tivo.

DNNA has shown elaborate "media servers" with additional slave units to distribute TV, music, photos, etc throughout the entire house. These will most likely be marketed under Denon or Escient nameplates as opposed to ReplayTV.
