"Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) says Maher's comment on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher" May 13, that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit," is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the show."

"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said of the Army's low recruitment numbers for April. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."

They call this treason???? LOLOLOLOLOL!!! Call the cops and the FBI!!

Well I think what he says does not fit under the freedom of speech protection. Freedom of speech is very broad but it still has guidelines and he of all people should know them.

Treason??

It's no secret that the Army is having trouble trying to find new recruits. There have been reports of recruiters intimidating teenagers and threatening to arrest them, offering to teach them how to fake drug tests, faking diplomas for them and overlooking mental and physical problems. So now recruiters are taking a day off to learn about 'ethics'.

Ever wonder why so many young people and their parents don't want them to graduate and then rush off to join the Army and be killed in a senseless stupid war? Duh!

Reports from who, kiara?

Some anti-war flower child from the 60's?

Maher: In summation, you cannot advocate for something you wouldn't do yourself. For example, I'm for fuel efficiency, which is why I drive a hybrid car and always take an electric private plane. I'm for legalizing marijuana, and so I smoke a ton of it.

Might be part of his problem. Potheads are known for not thinking to clearly nor being rational. No surprise there.

Responding to reports of widespread cheating to enlist unqualified applicants, the Army suspended recruiting nationwide yesterday to retrain its ranks in ethics, but officials said they would not lift the monthly quotas that some recruiters see as a catalyst for abuse.

Rather than "dislike of the military", it would be more accurate to describe his opinion as opposed to gross misuse and abuse of the military.

LOL...yep...the good ol' NYT...who just promised to STOP using so many annoynmous sourses...use two in this article alone.

Then the article starts out with "there have been several reported cases"....but doesn't even mention by WHOM?

And it looks to me like, contrary to what you and the NYT [known for all the false reports it's made in the past] are again trying to make this look different than how it really is.

""The Army takes allegations against recruiters seriously," said Paul Boyce, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, "and will continue to address these in a thorough and fair manner for all parties involved."

So...in FACT they are looking into these ALLEGATIONS and they have ordered a full day of 'stand-down' to be sure all reqruiters are fully aware of what's allowed and what's not.

He's one person. So what if some don't like what he said. Don't listen to him then. I don't like Howard Stearn, but I don't go around saying he should be off the air. I just don't listen to him. In the end, people form their own opinions of the military. Trouble is, most are afraid to voice those opinions for fear of retribution. Now to me in a country that's suppose to tout freedom, that's pathetic.

Treason? Good Lord, give the military something else to do.

And it does fall under freedom of speech, Libra. If it didn't, there'd be a whole lot more people serving time in prison for saying the things that they do. IMO, what he said is minor compared to other things I've heard.

- - - -

It is no accident that freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The Constitution's framers believed that freedom of inquiry and liberty of expression were the hallmarks of a democratic society.

But historically, at times of national stress -- real or imagined -- First Amendment rights come under enormous pressure. During the Red Scare" of the early 1920s, thousands were deported for their political views. During the McCarthy period, the infamous blacklist ruined lives and careers. Today, the creators, producers and distributers of popular culture are often blamed for the nation’s deep social problems. Calls for censorship threaten to erode free speech.

The First Amendment exists precisely to protect the most offensive and controversial speech from government suppression. The best way to counter obnoxious speech is with more speech. Persuasion, not coercion, is the solution."

LOL...how about YOU take what he says any way you wish to and I will do the same? Now you think you have to explain HIS opinions of our military? I don't think so helen. He does very well all by HIMSELF - doesn't need YOU to trying to make his OWN opinions look different that HE states them himself.

He's also referred to our military forces as cowards. That cost him his job. Didn't learn though....wants more attention? Fine...we'll see if there's any price to be paid from the public's opinion on his statements.

Good Lord, give the military something else to do.

Couldn't agree more with the above quote. IF our government and military didn't have to spend so much time trying to address what the anti-war lefties are always accusing them of...they'd HAVE more time to do what they're supposed to be doing.

But it takes a lot of time, money and manpower to constantly be investigating the zillions of accusations/allegations/etc that our own countrymen are using for their anti-war, anti-military agendas.

Well, kiara, MY sites as you call them haven't been part of the NYT having being 'vetted' twice in the past too years for their report. The lefties 'sources' one by one have been proven to be reporting inaccurately and not verifying their sources before ACCUSING people of wrong doing.

So...when you see that sources like the Washington Time...etc...have had to publically humilate themselves like your Bible's have done...THEN we'll address that issue.

But what I'm saying is..it doesn't matter who reports what....they're reporting allegations/accusations. Not GIVING proof of wrong doing.

You know what I find funny about your comments here? YOU'RE the one always demanding proof/backup to any statement I make about how I preceived something you've said. Demanding for me to prove it.

But here, and including your support of the NYT and the way they presented this issue,....any leftist accusation that is anti-Bush, anti-military, anti-war...YOU take as fact...even though they've provided NO PROOF.

You're oh-so-willing to quickly believe anything negative said about anything you're against....but this is so different. No, it's exactly the same thing.

YOU'RE the one always demanding proof/backup to any statement I make about how I preceived something you've said. Demanding for me to prove it.

It's each time you twist MY original statement or try to interpret it a different way so I ask for proof that I've ever said it. And so far you've never been able to supply a link. I object because I can speak my own thoughts here and I don't need a motor mouth doing it for me or telling others what my intentions are when they don't have a clue. Big difference than quotes from news sources.

Bill Maher is a comedian. What part of that don't you get? Or does it touch a nerve that he's so very close to the truth in what he says?

How about proving to me that the Army is having no trouble at all finding new recruits to go to Iraq and that young people are willingly lining up all over to 'fight for your freedom' and 'save your sorry ass'?

Isn't that the way it is in this discussion board. I don't like your sources, you don't like mine, I don't like what you say, you don't like what I say. This makes for no discussion as it shows in most of the threads. This is all bout name calling and who can call the worst name and who can defame the the best.

How do you think the military personal will like what he said?

"Real Time With Bill Maher" May 13, that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit," is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the show.

"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said of the Army's low recruitment numbers for April. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."

I am all for free speech but not defaming someone else to prove it and that is what he did he defamed the whole us army, navy and marines and if you can't see that then I guess you need glasses. You might have thought it was humerus but it really is defaming someones character.

The first admendment does not protect everyone or everything from freedom of speech. Just ask George Karlin.

I would like to hear from families of service men and women reply to that statement...as to what he thinks of their children.

kiara says:

It's each time you twist MY original statement or try to interpret it a different way so I ask for proof that I've ever said it.

Yep....just what I'm pointing out to you. Appears to be going over your head, though.

And so far you've never been able to supply a link. I object because I can speak my own thoughts here and I don't need a motor mouth doing it for me or telling others what my intentions are when they don't have a clue.

I haven't wanted to kiara...because I'm posting what I 'TAKE' from your comments. How I see them. And from past experience with both you and helen...you still deny it anyway. So over the years, I've decided it's not worth doing so.

Big difference than quotes from news sources.

No, there's not. Like in the other thread you just posted an op-ed piece. That's just that person's opinion, how that person sees the issue...just like how I see your posts. We all have opinions. Doesn't mean because the leftie newsmedia print it that it makes it FACT.

Bill Maher is a comedian. What part of that don't you get?

Who said I didn't know or get that? Are you assuming again, kiara. Because he's a comedian doesn't mean a thing. His comments are anti-military, anti-establishment.

Or does it touch a nerve that he's so very close to the truth in what he says?

No...no nerve touched that I'm aware of....of course you might THINK you know it's bothering one of my nerves.
Truth in what he says?....no, not imo.

How about proving to me that the Army is having no trouble at all finding new recruits to go to Iraq and that young people are willingly lining up all over to 'fight for your freedom' and 'save your sorry ass'?

You certainly enjoy referencing 'ass' a lot....is it a fixation of yours? My ass is not sorry...for my age..it's pretty darn good. So...speak to the condition of your OWN body parts, kiara.

As to addressing the enlistment issue and the numbers being down....there are multiple reasons. Our job market is improving....and history shows that each time it improves...less join the Armed Forces. This President has been working to increase the number of our Armed Forces...to make up for the clinton cuts....so the numbers are higher than they were before.
Plus then more and more leftist groups are fighting to keep recruiters out of the schools. They have had some successes.

I know you lefties are just ever so happy to read the numbers are down. And that's a shame to me. Discouraging young people from serving their country. kerry wanted to see a 'forced' service...this President doesn't. He's encouraging our young in other ways.

I said a long, long time ago, that when and if the day ever comes that we haven't encouraged enough of our young people to be willing to defend our nation...then we may as well turn over the keys and governorship of this great Nation to our enemies.

And I personally believe the ultra-left is the guiding force to seeing that come about.

Encouraging young people to protect their nation is a far cry from deliberately using them and sending them off to a war based on lies...... the war in Iraq has nothing to do with protecting the US.
