A true bonus item would have to be shipped in a used pizza box to be a real bonus. Anything less would be truly sub-standard.

I'm old enough to not be so naive. How 'bout you?
Ebay makes up their rules arbitrarily to suit their own needs. To not take advantage of an opportunity to even the score a bit is ludicrous.
Ebay is great, but fair is fair.
Call it unethical, call it stealing, I couldn't care less. It's a great idea and until Ebay fixes that problem, I hope more take advantage of it. I've been burned by Ebay "functionality" problems and their attitude seems to indicate that they don't care much about me losing a few dollars here and there, why should I feel bad about them losing a few?

I had the occasion to visit ebay's rules just yesterday on an entirely different matter and I'm pretty sure I read (skimmed) that *bonus items* are against the rules and I KNOW that *choice* auctions are against the rules.

Bonuses are fine as long as they apply equally to all bidders.
And, strictly, speaking, under Mboyko's scenario, the buyer isn't really being offered a choice of items. He is getting the second item free. However, he does have to pay the shipping on the item. And the seller does not combine shipping. And the charge may be more than the actual shipping charge.
This would be so incredibly confusing that I can't imagine anyone actually bidding, but...
Also, it really doesn't matter what kind of justification you give. It's pretty clear what the intent is, and I suspect that will be all that would matter.

You must not have seen my auction results tonight. Only one listed item didn't end with a bidder, out of like 20 or more. I'm in the money, baby!
