I also read the original thread. I found it interesting towards the end when the libel/slander lawsuits were mentioned.

There is something in libel law called "Fair Comment and Criticism." Basically what this means is that: If you put something in front of the public, the public is allowed to comment and criticize it, good or bad, and this is not libel or slander. There is a famous case from the 1800's involving three entertainers named The Cherry Sisters that is good reading for anyone interested in this portion of libel law.

Anyway, there isn't a chance in h*ll of a successful libel lawsuit coming out of this thing.

Also AW information on the posters can be/will be released to the authorities one way or another.

Edited to say that to those who are experienced in the legal system they are not phased by such threats.

Any judge in their right mind would throw the lawsuits in the trash because they have other cases more important. Frivilous?

Pyth00n's mention of a "Delta couple" had me wondering what people from Louisiana or Mississippi (Delta - get it?) would have to do with the painting of Sunflowers and Oleanders. So when I was cleaning out saved bookmarks today and saw this, I finally recalled the "Delta." It's interesting to attach names to what happened. And the reluctance of people to admit a painting is a forgery is amazing.

BIGGEST MISSED OPPORTUNITY
Authenticating a van Gogh: "About 15 years ago, I was the representative for the van Gogh painting ["Sunflowers and Oleanders"] that's been written about ... so much recently. It was very exciting for me. I got to take the painting to the Amsterdam Museum and several major U.S. museums, but I allowed them to talk me out of it being authentic.

"I became somewhat of an expert. I got to rub elbows with the art world and found out it was full of impostors like every other profession. My regret is that I just didn't pursue it hard enough and long enough. I'm still convinced the painting is authentic. Maybe I'll have time to go back to it in the future to challenge the authentication process at the World Court in The Hague."

Well, after my chat with an agent on Friday, this Monday I toted a HUGE folderful of documents (including both incarnations of the auction, its attachments e.g. the "Rewald Letter", Ms. Rewald's emails and the emails I've received from our charming friend "Weldon" ) down to our local FBI office. Nice folks: "Stop in anytime."

And this just in from Weldon (our "Bay Cities INV" person):

I know where you live! Are you ready to ---? I CAN see you

I had to run some errands downtown tomorrow anyway. Guess I'll just drop in again at the Bureau

Thanks for the update. Did the FBI give you any idea how fast they move on something like this? Do they keep you informed or now that it's in their hands we don't find out how it's progressing?

I'm sure they would love to see the new correspondence. How stupid can that person be? I guess we know that answer.

chococake, I didn't really ask. I suspect that the answer is (as with everything from undergoing a tax audit to roasting a turkey) "It depends." I didn't ask for updates - I figure if they need me, they know where I am.

When you say "that internet-read", are you referring to the original thread?

http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=246140&id=246140

or to something else? I've referenced so many threads I'm afraid I'll need a bit more info.

HCQ -
Interesting. The FBI works slowly but if/when the make a move it's because they are usually VERY certain of their target.

Doesn't "Weldon" know that Ramona is part Phillippine wild boar on her father's side, part Arkansas razorback hog on her mother's side, and VERY territorial?

BTW - when I insisted on hearing from the painting's real owner instead of a fake name ... dead silence!

Is this for sale again? I was looking at that auction site today and saw it featured.
Just in time for holiday shopping (although they don't give any auction stats (such as end date, etc.) on the page.

I've contacted the appropriate parties.

Interesting to note that he's cleaned it up a bit so it's now not quite outright fraud but merely pathetic and desperate. Ridiculous, unfounded claims are still there but at least he's not claiming that LACMA or Rewald authenticated the painting. I wonder how Haskins will feel about the owner republishing the statements that Haskins himself disavowed right here on AW.

Funny thing is, I was just thinking "Now that the election's almost over, what'll I do for fun?" Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

It is just as bogus as the first listing. Right on the featured auction page it states "Yellow Roses by Vincent Van Gogh." There is no evidence to prove that Van Gogh ever touched this canvas.

They should be selling brass balls because someone sure has them.

Do you suppose this will carry the thread through Christmas or New Years?

Well, not from me, most likely, unless they crank it up from "seriously questionable bogusness" to "outright fraud". I've BTDT with all the arguments, and have posted on the site's chatboard that anybody can contact me with the URL of the AW thread. I'm sure my message is going to be deleted as soon as an op sees it, so anybody with a free minute who wants to sign up over at OAS with, say, an anonymous hotmail/yahoo address and point folks on the chatboard to the AW thread might be doing some good.

If this is going to heat up again, I think it merits a new thread. A three act play is somehow appropriate for such a drama.

HCQ- If you open it, you'll hold the keys.

Everyone,

I tend to agree with xardon, "If this is going to heat up again, I think it merits a new thread".

I'm locking this thread, please feel free to start a new one.
