Stranger in a Strange Land was always one of my father's favourites. I have his copy here and keep meaning to return it -- I suppose I'll need to do that soon.
I'm also a big Vachss fan. His short fiction is just as engaging (which is the wrong word) as his long fiction -- and all of it paints pictures you often want to turn away from. Brilliant in his darkness.
Let's see -- recently got turned on to Angela Carter (thanks again, Pareau)... and have been reminded of the fairy tale stories in the series that begins with Blood Red, Snow White.

In the Deep Midwinter by Robert Clark.
Run - don't walk - to the nearest bookshop and get a copy.
'Bastard out of Carolina' is interesting - I'm about halfway through.

"Memoirs of a Geisha"...outstanding!
"Women of the silk"..also outstanding...
Yes, Maui ...any of Anne Rice...don't forget her earlier work: "Cry to Heaven": historical facts about the Castrati of Florence, used to sing in Opera.
"Feast of all Saints": life of the Quarterons (Creoles) in early Louisianna...

Pat, I hope you find it as compelling as I did. Let me know what you think.
----------------
I finished Bastard Out of Carolina.
I liked it a lot but felt somehow let down by the ending. That's only a first thought on it - I am still mulling it over. The ending wasn't quite what I expected.

My favorite of ALL time is THE TALISMAN from Steven King and Peter Straub. Also, if you like pure sci-fi, read BATTLEFIELD EARTH, by L. Ron Hubbard. I know they just made the movie, but as with any great book, the movie couldn't possibly compare!! (I won't bother to see it) I warn you though, it's a very long read...1500 pages of small print, but worth every minute.

RED DRAGON is one of the best books I have ever read.
I can hardly wait for HANNIBAL to come to the silver screen.

Bringing this thread back up because I just finished 'The Street Lawyer' - John Grisham. I love Grisham anyway but this one really has a poignant spin in dealing with the issues of helping the homeless. A very good reccomended read.
I'm starting Catherine Coulter's 'Riptide' right now...
