Obviously it seems that most posters here (whichever side of the political fence you sit on) doesn't like Walmart, with the exception of Linda and maybe another person.
Just curious Linda, but how do you justify Walmart paying such low wages that their employees have to go on welfare to just make ends meet? Where does social responsiblity come into play? Why should the largest corporation who makes gigantic profits get corporate welfare and push their employees on welfare as well?
I would guess Linda has a few stocks in Walmart, as it seems she may have a financial interest other than pig feed.

I once worked at Wal-Mart which help increase my dis-like for them. I also worked for K-Mart which was much better to work for.My personal opinion is there won't be a Wal-Mart ten years from now. Even the biggest fall.

I believe shoppers at our WM could easily afford to pay those prices. We are basically a retirement town...that builds new banks almost every month. Losts of money moving into this town.
And on 'could the workers afford those price?'....probably not. But neither can clerks that work at Nordstroms...they usually can't afforded the $800.00 casual sweaters either. It's not just WM where that issue would be the same.

Do I feel bad that some elderly have to work to suppliment their retirement? Sure. But it's not my fault.
I wasn't the one who planned their retirement future. THEY did.
We chose to do things differently, as have zillions of American's. We choose to do without and save/invest our money so we could attempt to reach our goal of retirement when we turned 50. And we were lucky enough to have been able to meet that goal.
That others chose differently for their lives was their choice.

Linda, i agree with gotree, how dare you to be financially secure in your retirement and who do you think you are planning for your retirement so succesfully that you met your goals. You really should consider giving most of your hard earned money to the less fortunate so that you can stand along side them in a more equal manner and have to get yourself a job just to pay rent, buy food and keep your head above water.

Not at all. You repeating lies don't make them true. I believe, very strongly, in personal responsibility. We each are responsible for our own lives. We each can choose to use the advantages we are offered in this county or not. But when people make decisions....they live with the consequences of those same decisions.
I've never felt/believed my government owes me anything except the opportunity to make the best of my life.
I believe in helping people when they are in need....but I don't believe the government is our nanny. I believe in doing it the way it was done before governemnt grew to the point it has now. People gave to others....they also donated to charities that help the less fortunate.
But we ARE each responsible for where we end up in life. WE alone made our own choices....no one else.

Actually in my case Ms.Fenix..Walmart is the only game in town. We had 3 nice grocery stores before Walmart moved in and now we have walmart and winn dixie..but the nearest Target or Kmart is 25 miles at the nearest mall in Louisiana.. Super Walmart moved in and tempted us all with their lower prices and more choices then as the other shops closed up..Walmart's prices started to climb.. Now they have the monopoly and can do as they choose..they have taken much of the choices away with replacing them with their own brands too.
I'm all for Capitalism...just hate when any company holds a monopoly.. we do however have a choice to drive 25 miles to the mall but with the price of gas..we're buggered any way you look at it...

Oh, it is definitely the consumers fault, no argument there...but the world will always be full of dumb desperate people.. and those who are willing and waiting to profit from their stupidity..
It's really very depressing..
Since Walmart exploits workers and uses unfair business tactics such as Maggie described to force competitors out of business, you can reasonably conclude that Walmart is now the only game in town because of Walmart's actions. Of course people who are willing to shop at Walmart stores and employees who are willing to work for low pay in their non unionized labor force contribute to their success.

Again, I believe it is different according to where the WM's are located.
In my small town, they employ ....gosh I don't know the exact number....but many hundreds of local people.
And only one of the other grocery stores here closed down when our SWM went in. I believe it's because the other ones offer different things that people here like....that WM doesn't offer to them. Like one of our small Mom and Pop stores offers the best and largest selection of fresh fish. Another one always runs double 'coupon days' that many of our elderly take advantage of and they're known for their wonderful fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Another one treats our most wealthy as kings/queens. They do everything excecp pick out your groceries for you. It's their excellent, individual service that attracts their customers....keeps them coming back. And many of our elderly like that as they aren't physically able to shop at WM and do it all themselves.

Unions here in the US have been rejected by WM workers.....as they have been by a ton of workers in different fields/occupations.
Our unions are LOSING membership...not gaining worker support.

most retail jobs do not pay well,it is not just WALMART,but SEARS,remember once upon a time there was just SEARS and Montgomery Ward??
And it is not just store clerks and cashiers,office workers dont get much either.

I agree, stop, but I also see these jobs as having filled a need for some.
Housewifes who don't want full time jobs....maybe they love buying clothes so they work in a clothes shop to get discounts.
The elderly supplimenting their income.
Young college students.
etc. etc. And I don't believe many think of these jobs as the 'career they've always wanted'. It's just a 'fill in job' - for the time being. That, imo, is what they have such a large turnover of employees.
