Deur1, the French roots are from Canada, not France, so we'll soon see how generous Quebec really is.

Well hey Deur1, let me be the first to welcome you to the Round Table. If i were you i'd just ignore all the posts about you being someone else and when they start finding new ways to spell your userid, i'd just ignore that too. It seems to be the MO of some of the more crazy people on this board, they like to do their best to try to run off anyone new to this board and they want it all for themselves.

"When these things happen overseas, I always see the USA there helping out. Let's see what happens this time around."

Just curious, but are you looking for a handout?

What about after 9/11? International support for the United States came in from everywhere. How can you forget that? International support was also there for going after Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Did you forget that as well, or are you just conveniently forgetting it in order to make a biased judgement?

Ron, wouldn't you say that at least it's rather insensitive of the president to be seen strumming on a guitar during this nation's largest natural disaster.

http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001051313

The Newhouse News Service article published Tuesday night observed, "The Louisiana congressional delegation urged Congress earlier this year to dedicate a stream of federal money to Louisiana's coast, only to be opposed by the White House. ... In its budget, the Bush administration proposed a significant reduction in funding for southeast Louisiana's chief hurricane protection project. Bush proposed $10.4 million, a sixth of what local officials say they need."

Local officials are now saying, the article reported, that had Washington heeded their warnings about the dire need for hurricane protection, including building up levees and repairing barrier islands, "the damage might not have been nearly as bad as it turned out to be."

I think I agree with helen here. LOL After all....we had a terrible hurricane in two states...every man, woman and child in the US should stop doing anything they enjoy doing even if only for a few minutes. All government business should be shut down. All Federal business should be haulted. And heaven forbid anyone wants to play a song on a guitar....THEY should be hung.

They should only be seen in public with an extremely long face.....no smiling at anything allowed. No siree....absolutely NO smiling. That will be a tremendous help to those who now find themselves homeless.

[Wake up helen to the reality of the REAL world.]

silly, linda.

Activities such as this during a disaster only serve to reinforce his reputation as an insensitive clod.

Right now he is reading a speech...just like a cowboy who would rather be playing his guitar. Where is his heart?

A super Canadian urban search and rescue team (which helped so much during 9/11) has been packed and ready to go for a couple of days now and many other agencies have stepped forward but the American government hasn't got back to any of them yet. They're on phones telling them they want to get down there as they need clearance. Time is of the essence and their hands are tied while people die.

So yes, everyone here is saying that it reminds them of the 'My Pet Goat' incident when Bush sat there like a dummy. He should have been sending out troops the first day or maybe before the hurricane even struck as there was plenty of warning. They should have had food rations and drinking water and supplies ready to go immediately. Heck, even on the EO they had warnings daily about the impending storm. Too bad it was ignored by the leadership and so many lives were lost.

The rescue team is hoping to leave tonight.

There was talk awhile ago about trying to set up a program where search and rescue teams could have special procedures/pre-approval clearance for crossing the border in situations such as this. It was discussed again when firefighters couldn’t get clearance to cross the border to fight a major forest fire because of Homeland Security. By the time it goes through bureaucracy, valuable time is wasted. It's not like these guys are terrorists.

All countries, including Canada should have programs set up so they can receive help from other countries immediately and I hope someone pays heed to this because tragedy can strike anywhere. Everyone who works on these teams wants to help the people involved, they want to save lives... and politics/excessive bureaucracy shouldn’t be involved in it.

Kiara - you seem to be ignoring the fact that over the weekend they called for an evacuation of the areas and set up the emergency shelter locations. People ignored them, figured that nothing to bad would happen and went about life as usual. The day before Katrina hit, Fox was doing interviews with people sitting outside a bar drinking margaritas on Bourbon street.

I'm not saying that the victims are to blame but at the same time, how do you blame the president for the fate of people that ignored all the weather reports and warnings, evacuation recommendations, eventual evacuation orders, and notices of shelters?

On a stupid bureaucracy note as you made... a couple years ago when we had the big fire in So Cal, the Canadian Super Scoopers were all set and ready to come down but could not because their pilots and crew had not been cleared by our NSA. Nothing worse than logic optional government.

Fenix, I'm not ignoring the fact that people decided to stay. In fact this was discussed during the tsunami last year when they had emergency response training sessions here on the west coast. Even though some will choose to stay in the area and endanger themselves, the rescue teams are still trained to help them and want to rescue them and they expect that it will be part of the situation they will have to face.

Since 9/11 there have always been questions about how ready North America is for any tragedy and if they've learned anything in recent years.

When I said 'leadership' I mean 'everyone' at the top in the bureaucracy who can organize immediate relief and direct it. Even sitting back watching it on television we could see that they needed immediate help.

Since the president is at the VERY top and speaks for all, I figure he should have been making his big speech yesterday already, reassuring everyone that things were being looked after and that he was sending in troops...... being a leader in charge.

But that's just my opinion.

(Yup, I remember the Super Scoopers... Homeland Security maybe thought they had some B.C. Bud in there? )

Seriously, even on that highway where people are walking in the heat without water..... isn't there a helicopter or something that can lower down some water jugs to them? What am I missing here?

Besides the picture that Helen posted of Bush playing the guitar, I swear I heard him making emergency type speeches before and after Katrina. But that was probably his double or clone.

Leadership also means you have to trust those under you.

Everyone's life in the US did not stop or change because of Katrina, he has responsibilities to those people also. He flew today in AF1 and is coming back on the ground.

He does not travel alone and it does take planning for him to make a ground visit anywhere.

Kiara - you know - I saw a shot of a flatbed truck filled with people and was wondering myself why there are not more of those. You have people walking a day and a half to get to the Dome... why not put flat beds on the routes there to pick people up. One of the Fox reporters stopped and tried to do an interview with an 80 year old man ... when they asked him where he was going he said "To the Dome... They got water there." There was no way that old guy was going to make it there in any kind of shape.

Good point, fenix!

Global news has reported that the governor of Louisiana made an official request to the B.C. rescue team for help and they've now flown out. It’s a team of doctors, police, engineers and dogs with a huge truckload of supplies.

A news story showed the military arriving and handing out supplies at one place and they were very coordinated and in charge. Hopefully there will be many more troops because they are desperately needed now and do an excellent job.

Good to hear Kiara - they are going to need all the help they can get.

I know you don't get Fox up there but one of their reporters is about to blow. Sheppard Smith has been doing, honestly, an amazing job covering all of this. He's been down in the dregs in New Orleans since it began and this morning you began to see a glimpse of the frustration that the residents there must be feeling. He did a clip that you could tell was a result of anger and frustration on one of the bridges going to the dome where people have been walking for days and had emergency crews drive right past them. behind him in the shot was an elderly man that had died and was laying on the side of the road with a blanket over his head. Everything about him in that clip from his words, his voice, even they way he stood in that clip voiced frustration and anger.

One of the big points of frustration that has been coming from first responders right now is that there is a huge lack of co-ordination and ability to comunicate across organizational lines. Hopefully this is going to be a wake up call and once all of this is completed all of these communication avenues that everyone has said since 9/11 were going to be a priority are actually going to be dealt with.

Fenix, on our news last night they showed the clip of the lady on the highway who had her husband die right there so I wonder if that's the same story. She said she asked a cop for help and he just told her to move the body out of the way before it started to smell. I checked other news later and didn't see the story again.

This looks like something you would expect to see in a 3rd world country. The money is there, help is available, food and supplies are ready but there was no planning to put it all into motion when it was needed at the very beginning. Desperation has set in and people are frustrated and angry. How very sad. They needed the military there immediately ..... some say they need at least 30,000 on the ground right now.

Might be the same guy but in this report he was alone on the overpass (for some reason that even he didn't understand it's now deserted) in front of this man.

Now he's on another overpass were homes by the Dome are now burning. Of course no one can get in there to help anyone that may be in them. At least in California you get a six month break between the floods and the fires - these guys didn't even get 5 days.

Proof positive that if you leave it up to the Republicans, they will sit on their @sses and complain about others not helping. So far, I have seen other countries jump to the rescue faster than Bush bothered with. As I said it before, the President should have been working on this relief effort last Saturday, at the very latest. He knew this was coming, and all signs pointed to catastrophe. Instead, he was coming down from his coke binge, hanging out playing guitar, smoking a doobie behind the wood shed, and so on... This president is a joke. He is an embarrasment to mankind. 3 days were lost because of this dipsh!t who has yet to show any signs of leadership during this tragedy.
