Now when it seems we have anothe opportunity to be charitable toward others, should charitable donations be tax deductible?
I say no. If you are going to give then give. Not because it can come off your taxes.

Ron - While I agree to some extent, it's the wealthy that would stop giving if they couldn't deduct it from their taxes. I don't itemize, so what I give - I give. It's that way with most people who are in the lower to middle income bracket. Do you think the wealthy would continue to give away millions if they didn't get something in return? I highly doubt it.

Yes, imo, they should continue to be deductable UNTIL or unless we ever get tax reform moving in the Congress. Lots of talk about a flat-tax with no deductions at all.
I've posted links in the past that show how charitable associations/groups do more for the poor than do government paid programs. They volunteer their time whereas government employees are paid, paid well and have excellent benefits.
So, imo, since this is more what I'd call 'privatized' I feel they should continue to encourage those who do give to keep doing so.

Charities yes. Children NO. (Because, of course I give to charities - but I have no children. That's right, it's all about me.
Really I wish that we had a much simpler system. In principle I like the higher sales tax - no income tax plans. But I'm not sure if they make good economic sense.
edited, because I accidently posted before I was through typing.
