This takes the cake, imo.
How else can we make prisoners more comfortable and happy.
And some complain about the poor treatment they get. LOL

"Washington State is planning to open a latte stand inside the McNeil Island penitentiary."
"You heard me right: A "give me a double tall mocha with extra foam" latte stand for the inmates."
"Can someone - PLEASE - tell me what the hell the bozos in Olympia are thinking?"
"The Department of Corrections says it's 'thinking' that the latte stand will make a fine addition to its vocational training program."
"Well, that may be what the D.O.C. says, but I say this is one of the dumbest damn ideas I've come across!" ---
[and he's included a link for anyone who wishes to express their opinions on this matter...directly to the prison.]

They deserve to be treated with respect. They're human beings, for God's sake.
They made a little mistake and now are being made to pay for it in a hell hole prison.
What's this world coming to?
A good Latte will make their day go by more pleasant.
Don't you think??

With the country and your administration in such miserable straits, coffee and milk is what you worry about?

Realistically - what is wrong with it? They are going to have to purchase the coffee products, it's not like they are free and for the men that work in the machines, it does provide a skill where you can get a job pretty much anywhere in the country in a matter of days.
Isn't getting these guys back on their feet as quickly as possible upon release a priority?

Work Experience
McNeil Island Corrections Center is a work-oriented institution and has 222 Class II Industries positions and approximately 900 additional jobs throughout the institution and island. These positions include food service workers, maintenance workers, fire crew, barbers, recreation aides, teacher's aides, library assistants, laundry workers, clerks, janitors, carpenters, painters, welders, plumbers, electricians, and steamfitters.
It is a medium security prison now.
As you can see they have many job training opportunities.

"Tom DeLay and good old Scooter."
I believe your one of the smarter Liberal posters here.
Not that they're not all brilliant...Its just, youre the one they look to for comfort and direction.
Saying that, I have to believe that is why there's such a unfair balance of genius on your side of the fence.

Washington is trying to take over as leader of coffee drinkers per capita. Right now, Oregon is leading the way.
My question would be what kind of coffee are they giving them? Starbucks? Seattle's Best? Coffee People? Stumptown? or are they giving them Folgers/Maxwell House. If it is one of the latter two, then it would be classified as torture and the ACLU should be contacted immediately.
Can you check into this Ron?

Heck i say why not open up a McDonalds and a Taco Bell inside the prison. That way the prisoners can learn the proper way to wear a paper hat and mess up someones order. Imagine the prison riots that would ensue over it. No, i didn't want pickles on my burger and where are my fries?

I don't think some of these people (fine people at that) would or should be in close proximity to a fry-o-later.
Some of them lack the mental capacity to run such equipment.
I'm sure many know exactly what I'm talking about.
For example:
You can give a computer to one person and it becomes a useless piece of garbage.
You give the same computer to another person and Bam. Well written sentences, good grammar, innovative ideas concisely stated for all to understand.(almost all)
Maybe one of the other here has an example they can share with us.
Just my opinion.

Example #1:
"You can give a computer one person and it becomes a useless piece of garbage."
Are you giving the computer "one person" or are you giving "one person" a computer? Which would be worthless? The computer? the person? none or both?

Personally, I have to agree that a latte stand inside a prison is ridiculous. The idea that it's there for "job training" is also. Let's be real: it doesn't take all that long to learn how to use a the equipment and a released prisoner getting a job at a coffee house can easily be trained on the job. There are better areas of vocational or educational training that could be offered.
I get sick and tired of hearing about all the percs prisoners get these days; they're in their for punishment and/or correction. They get better health care than a lot of law-abiding people on the outside, and are fed better than most of our poverty-stricken by law-abiding citizens as well. And that's just the big stuff.

Bunni - I agree that they are there for punishment or correction but if you release them with no marketable skill set then they are just going to reoffend. Barista training does not take a long time but most employers would prefer experience so what's the harm? I just don't see having to paying $4.00 with coffee with milk as a perk.

Would that be for the child molesters too?
The world needs more bleeding hearts. That's what's got us in the crap we're in today. Criminals know they can get away with murder (literally).
I believe in punishment first for crimes committed. I agree with education, highschool and even some college. I also believe they should pay for that schooling, out of their pockets.

In my state they just gave a prison "award" and percs to some inmate. Transexual murdered 2 cops. It hasn't been very well received to say the list.
In Japan, "prison" is a very small room with few furnishings where you are supposed to contemplate your wrongdoings, in between the lectures on what your crimes have done to society. No color tvs, phones, "conjugal visits", etc.

Maybe while they're having their double-skim-half-calf-extra-foo-foo cappu-mocha-chino-lattes, they can discuss the literary and socio-political merits of little Scooter's stories about 10 year old girls having sex with caged bears.
I'd pay a dollar for that!!
