I'm so sorry for the people for whom Christmas is the ONLY time they share the warmth of family get togethers....my family has many throughout the year...we like each other ALL the time not just at Christmas

Of course families that don't actually live in the same state might think to use a time of the year where most people have time off from work, school, etc. to get together. I wonder what time of year that might be. Some time around the end of December rings a bell....

You neocons keep saying you're self-reliant...even though YOU live off your Democrat wife, other neocons think children should inherit their parents SS and Bear expects a handout from FEMA !
I guess Repugs have a VERRRY different definition of "self-reliant".

Most people on welfare are Democrats...like your wife?

Profe, although they may be receiving good severance packages, it is still a huge blow to those people in part because there's probably not too many compensory jobs to go to. And, a whole plant shutting down? Thats a big thing for some small towns - it's like a way of life for many generations to work in those plants, it is sometimes the greater part of the mainstay of a semi-thriving local economy. If your "some will get it wrong" was a reference to my thoughts on it, I really dont think I got it wrong at all.

And classic, I agree with you...dont see how anybody could enjoy being around the mingotree that posts here. Totally too obnoxinous. Could you imagine a whole family of that'ness?? lol!!

Just one more sign of our booming economy

The problem with mingotree/cowfarm is you are completely clueless. The reason GM is laying off people is they are making the biggest pieces of crap on the road today.

If you look at the whole picture, Toyota, which manufactures ALL of it USA sold vehicles in the America's, is building many new plants in the USA. Employing many more than the 30K that GM is laying off. Nissan has done the same with all it's models except for two built in the USA. This is not an economy problem, but a quality problem. Nissan and Toyota have had record sales over the past couple of years.

So no matter what dumbassed democrat spin you want to put on it, the bottom line is the problems at GM are not because of any economy ups or downs, but simply poor engineering and workmanship. And the America Public has figured that out.

dbl, I understand your position, and do feel sorry for the folks who'll be out of work who aren't retiring soon. My statement about folks getting it wrong wasn't directed at you necessarily, it was about those people who'll listen to the first news reports of this and think GM is just going to fire all those people all at once. They're wrong if they think that, that's all I meant.

Stonecold, I don't see why you need to put a political slant to this. I'm a dumbass democrat, and I couldn't agree with you more. If Toyota made a truck that would pull my 6 horse sleeper trailer, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. For now, my trucks are all GMCs, with the exception of one old Ford. (Yeah, I know, "old Ford" is an oxymoron) but I wouldn't own an American car on a bet.

Japan also has national health care...their car companies don't have that expense. Add to that their manipulation of prices and they will come out ahead of American car manufacturers.

Better American cars will be produced when the EXECUTIVES decide to make better cars...assembly line workers have NO say in that but THEY pay the price.

Stone,I totally agree. If any other car manufacturer had put out the crap GM has, they would have been out of business years ago. I just can't understand why anybody would want a damn Buick. GM used to having a saying "As GM goes there goes the rest of America" I think America is about to have a big Heart Attack if GM is the HeatBeat of America.

" Japan also has national health care...their car companies don't have that expense."

Most Japanese models sold here are made in America.

No matter how you slice it, you cannot pay somebody 80K//yr in salary and benefits to put on left side door mirrors.

Completely irrelevant. The Japanesse USA assembly plants all have health care expenses.

assembly line workers have NO say

Wrong again. They have the right to report any problem with a vehicle, but the US company employees have the additude of letting poor workmanship be repaired after the fact where the Japanesse company employees are encouraged to find and fix problems before the vehicles are released to the public.

Having worked for both, it is night and day when it comes to total corporate commitment to vehicle quality.
