Just went to EBAY to check prices on Playstation. Don't have one---just find it interesting to see what 'HOT' Christmas items are doing....but anyways--very interesting research.
The prices have leveled off--so they are ending reasonably close to retail--so no one is going to make their fortunes......but if you check some of the systems that went for HIGH prices it appears that many of them were intentionally BOGUS with many of the bidders now NARU'd. So either there was a couple of bidders out to get the sellers--or a whole slew of them.
I wonder what the people who honestly bid over $1000.00 are feeling--now that the prices have fallen????
If anyone does have one and is considering auctioning--it just might be better to wait til it is closer to Christmas when the panic actually sets in and if Sony doesn't manage to come up with a reasonable amount for the stores

I just read in my local paper that Microsoft is coming out with a better item. Think its called XBox. Abes Oddesy's founder and company is here in our small town, and they dumped Sony and went with Microsofts system. Says its better. Im happy with my old playstation, myself.

I'm a Video game idiot--don't know a thing about them---but I do like to watch the kids race around with Donkey Kong

Zazzie...
I just sold one last week for $751. I have just acquired another.. So I hope they haven't leveled off like you say..
And yes they play DVD movies and best of all your controllers from the old PSX work as well as the older PSX games.. So if you were a real PSX fan and had certain games you really liked.. You don't have to have multiple systems setup and cluttering the area around your TV..

The price today on EBAY varied---but none went for more than $600 and some were $480. What is the retail price??
But the most interesting thing about it is the bidders with no intention of buying--just messing up auctions.

Zazzie..
The one I bought last week cost me $399.. But I got 3 Games that I didn't sell with the unit. The unit I bought today from Best Buy was just a normal unit. I paid $299.
But I have been told that supplies are low and unless you live by some of the big sellers like best buy or toys-r-us.. They are hard to get. I was watching them at best buy today, they were unloading a truck.. They wheeled out on a 4 wheel rack 10 PSX2. I thought they would be for presold buyers.. They said I could buy it. I picked up 3 of them, but was told I could only buy one at a time. So I bought my one walked it out to my car, and the others were gone by the time I went back in for another.
While I was standing their they wheeled out about 8 more and they were gobbled up before I could get one of those also..

Well--you will double your money if the price holds--but you might think about waiting til it's closer to Christmas. It looks like just about everyone who managed to buy one has it on EBAY---there seems to an auction ending every 30 seconds for another unit.
Good Luck

Yep, I'm going to buy one more for listing after the Thanksgiving weekend.. I'm going to try my first.. First Bid Wins auction with the one I bought today. I'm going to list it for $600 and let it go to the first bidder.
I think it will sell.. If not I know between Thanksgiving and Christmas their will be some desparate last minute shoppers that will pay the price.
BTW I also have one for myself.. I'm a nut for computers and game systems. My son has already pounded my brains in in the new John Madden Football game for the PSX2.
I don't know how he does it.. He beats me all the time.. Worse, he takes great pride in doing it. I told him that if he didn't let me win once in a while.. I was going to take the money for the system out of his allowance.. Now we'll see who wins the next game..

My son got one that Thursday that the stores got them and he said it was $400 but don't know what extras he got.
Heard that it was in the newspaper that some guy on ebay was selling hundreds(?)and made over a $100,000 and didn't even have them. Hope that is just another ebay legend and not another story to make online auctions look fraudulent.

This is just my opinion and in the large money-making scheme of things it probably doesn't matter much, however. . .
I think all of you sellers who go out and purchase multiple systems just so you can make large amounts of money by selling them to desperate hardworking parents trying to make their children happy at Christmas, should be ashamed of yourselves. There will be many disappointed children Christmas morning because their parents couldn't afford to spend $600 on an item that retails for $299. Many of them stood in line to get a system only to be beat out by sellers planning to make big bucks off the hopes and wishes of children (yes, and adults). I know there is no law against it, but there should be. However, I suppose if you can live with yourselves in the long-term, who am I to condemn? Fortunately, I have a child who understands the delemna. I've ordered mine and although it may not be here by Christmas, my son knows that I won't be forced to take food out of his mouth to get him one.
I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm sorry if I have. Just my opinion.

Thanks, Meya. I didn't mean to offend anyone, but Christmas has a way of driving me crazy (with two children AND a grandchild). Now they throw it up in your face BEFORE Halloween. I guess the media is to blame more than anything else.

Yes. The US version plays DVD Movies.
The European Version requires an optional module. (most likely due to the different format. NTSC vs. PAL)
My Prediction:
In Three Months the shelves will be full.
In Four Months, they will be marked down, bundled with software, and offering rebates. (provided the Microsoft X-Box is on schedule)
In Six Months they will be for sale used in pawn-shops for a hundred bucks.
(that was the history of the Dreamcast)

I know there is no law against it, but there should be.
Maybe there should also be a law to require manufacturers to make enough product so that everyone who wants one can get one.
Of course, once we have that, we'll need a law to force the manufacturers to sell their product at a price that everyone can afford. How are low-income families supposed to be able to afford $300 for an item like this?
At this point, the manufacturers probably won't want to produce the item, so there will need to be another law passed that requires them to do so.
Once the manufacturers realize they have no choice but to produce the item, there will need to be more laws to make sure that they don't cut corners by using substandard materials and components.
Everybody knows that getting the government involved in private enterprise is a good thing.

I get this feeling that there will be enough for Christmas. All that is happening now is manipulation...the item is in "short supply" therefore it becomes a have-to-have item. Just after Thanksgiving, miraculously, millions will be rolled out and on to the shelves. Do you think SONY would miss this opportunity at tremendous profit. With a few dollars in parts and Chinese prison slave labor, they can sell these thing for $299.00 each. Do you think they could be that stupid?

Mark090 says: With a few dollars in parts and Chinese prison slave labor…... I don’t think so! The components in that system cost considerably more than a few dollars. The cost of a high density (several million gate equivalents) small geometry integrated circuit is significantly more than a few dollars. Laser diodes for DVD readers run several dollars each in quantity. Dynamic RAMs run several dollars more. The circuit boards are probably a few bucks also. Now add the cost of injection molded cases, printed manuals, packaging, etc. The production cost of this unit easily exceeds "a few dollars."
The fabrication equipment to make such integrated circuits can easily exceed $100 million per production line. Most of the assembly is done by very expensive pick and place automatic equipment. Surface mount component flow soldering machines can cost $100s of thousands of dollars. The infrastructure to manufacture an item of this nature adds significantly to the costs. No one in their right mind is spending that kind of money to build an electronics assembly facility in a Chinese prison.
The closest a “Chinese prison slave laborer” will ever get to one of these units is if he escapes and robs someone in the WalMart parking lot.
The great majority of exports from the Peoples Republic of China are textiles. They have almost zero exports of higher-end consumer electronics. Japanese companies such as Sony tend to sub-contact component manufacturing but they usually reserve assembly and final test for their factories in Japan. This gives them a much higher degree of quality control.

Actually, closer to 2 BILLION to make a factory to produce leading-edge integrated circuits.
Shortages are real. As it gets harder and harder to make sophisticated electronic components, and as competition increases in making better/faster/more sophisticated items, companies will continue to "guess wrong" and not have enough components on hand to make the latest and greatest game machines and other electronics. (and the losers will be in huge supply at the auctions, selling for "75% off! " ).
We've seen shortages in RAM, microprocessors, LCD screens just to name a few in the past year or so.
Sony is costing themselves bigtime in lost sales/market share by their "manipulations". Its actually more likely that executives lost their jobs over this shortage.

Actually Mark, Sony LOSES money on each PlayStation 2 console sale. It costs Sony $488 to make each one of the systems.
The profit is in licensing for the GAMES.

To try and make up for the hard feelings that you have toward the capitalist auction sellers around here I am going to give you something that is selling on ebay right now for $1500.00, YES $1500.00 and it will be no cost to you.
If you go to ebay and search for "XBOX" you will find an auction where some guy is selling information on how to preorder your new XBOX with 3 games. And his price is $1500.00 for this information.
Here it is for FREE! Just for you. http://www.gamestop.com/index.jsp
Go to this web site and search for XBOX and you will be able to preorder an XBOX System and 3 games of your choice and you don't have to pay until it is shipped.
Plan ahead and little Johnny will be jumping for joy next Christmas.
All better now?

I wouldn't pay anyone $1500 to pre buy anything. Now that is outrageous. Thanks for the link. I didn't mean to imply that sellers shouldn't make a profit on the system. They should make something for their time and energy. Putting things up for auction is work in itself. I do some selling, too, so I know the work involved. I guess the fault should really be on those bidders who are willing to pay. Not the sellers who are willing to sell. My mistake. We all know the systems will cost far less and be far more plentiful once the Christmas season is over. So, I guess you should sell them while you can. Yes, I'm all better. Finished my Christmas shopping today and didn't have to buy one thing related to PS2.

CBLEV....
The day after Christmas back when Tickle-Me-Elmo was all the craze (and other crazes before Christmas) he was sitting on the Toys R Us shelf in large quantities and a week later he was dicounted. The hype was over and he was considered over and done. A few months later he was discounted 25% and quickly were seen everywhere.
I am sure like above mentioned that Sony is not going to miss any chance in getting every penny they can get the holiday season. But in case you can't get one for $299. and dont want to pay high costs...the week after Christmas go out looking for them everyday. I am sure you will find one sitting on a shelf.
Then teach your kids something....patients is a virtue. And then remind yourself of all the people who paid all the money they paid and smile! 8*)

If anyone bothered to look at the auctions on EBAY---as I mentioned at the beginning---most (if not all) of the Playstations that went for $1500.00 appear to have been won by people who had absolutely no intention of paying for them----even some of their ID's appear to have been created to mock the sellers. Most have now been Naru'd........but as a result of their bogus bidding many honest bidders & sellers were swept up into the hype.....it created a false market.
