eventer- that's a really thoughtful & generous offer. It makes me happy to know that users on this board go to lengths like that to help each other. (I've seen it time & again but it still gives me the warm fuzzies every time.)

Thanks CAgrrl. I just hate to see someone miss out on something they obviously really wanted. Doesn't concern me to use my CC on the web..probably should WISH it did but it doesn't. Used it quite often w/no problem so far.
Triplesnack..the offer stand open. Email me here at AW with the auction number & I'll PayPal her the funds immediately for this auction. Even if you don't care to share the Auction Number information, just email me her PayPal ID & the amount & I'll beam the money to her. Then you can contact her & tell her it's for your auction.
Easy as pie & you'll have the book as an early present.
NO, it doesn't work for those of you who might want me to extend this offer to the new Mercedes you just purchased on ebay motors.

Wrong.
I believe if I tried to make the mistake right and the seller refused, I would just forget about it and accept my neg.
I also haven't seen where triplesnack has done anything but try to be courteous and respectful.
I would be doing the same thing, but I wouldn't be paying electronically.

Hello everyone! Thank you all for your opinions and suggestions. My server was having problems yesterday so I wasn't able to get on line, but I'm amazed to see so many nice replies to my questions here.
macandjan yep I do know that a dishonest waitress could copy down my CC info while she is out of sight and perpetrate some kind of fraud with it. I don't worry about that so much, and even not so much the act of transmitting the info over the internet. I'm mostly just not too keen about the info being stored in somebody else's database where it could be hacked. Yeah, I know, perhaps not so reasonable a fear. But that's just me.
HartCottageQuilts I think I see your point (and I am trying to be respectful of the seller's viewpoint here) but would guess no, it's not my particular seller's situation. I'm always very quick to send payment (even if a money order is required) as my feedback will attest to, so the longest a seller has to wait for payment is just the few days that it takes the post office to deliver it. And as I mentioned, I was the only bidder on this item, in the last few hours of the auction, so there's not another buyer standing in the wings who would be sending payment faster then me.
Hi Mayfair! Stick your nose right in! The checking account deduction thing I'm even MORE leery about. Credit cards I think I understand, and I do know about the protection of being able to do a chargeback. But the checking account thing is a whole new can of worms.
HJW Well I'm not a deadbeat yet. I think by bidding on her auction, I agreed to her terms (even though I didn't read them closely enuf), so if I refuse to pay I guess I do wear the "deadbeat" shirt. But thanks for the support!!
pickersangel, LindaK, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable pulling contact info in this case, our emails have been very courteous and respectful so far, and even though I don't like it, respecting her wish to remain anonymous seem like the polite thing to do. Though, read my update, she since then has provided me with info!
sg52 Thanks for sharing your experience; that's what I'd like to do, get thru this situation responsibly and respectfully.
twelvepole "I think part of the problem is that this seller won't accept anything except online payments, so if she wouldn't accept cash or a money order for the payment, why would she accept those for a refund of the fees?" Yeah, I don't understand the logic here, please read my update below.
vargas I do understand that some folks have mobility problems or that it's very inconvenient for them to get to the bank/post office/whatever. But a cash payment was also rejected.
abingdomcomputers From what I've read about PayPal here on the boards, I don't want to give them any info at all at this time. I'm not a seller, but if at some point I choose to be in the future, I don't want to get entangled with PayPal before I've had a chance to sit down and really evaluate if I want to use their service. And it sounds like they have yet to fully hammer out their terms of service.
shaani"Perhaps the seller is reluctant to give you her name and address at this time because by doing so she may think that you will choose to just mail her the funds by check, cash or money order." It's starting to look like that may well be the case.
dman3 , BlackCoffeeBlues, Glenda, I am leaning towards Billpoint now, after giving it some thought and reading the reasurances here. And it does make sense that I do have the option of doing a chargeback if something goes wrong with the deal (which I worry about when a seller seems so entrenched in handling the transaction in a way I don't understand).
eventerThank you! for your kind offer to be the "middleman." Sounds like it would just complicate the situation though.
keziak Thanks, I am trying to keep this seller up to date.
The latest:
I got another (very polite) email from the seller who says she's assuming that I'm not going to pay her for the book, and that she wants me to reimburse her $1.50 for her eBay fees. She says she's sorry to be so "petty" about it, but out of her last 8 sales, 7 buyers are defaulting because they don't want to use the CC payment services. She provided me with her name and address so I could send her the money!
I sent a reply that said I'd let her know my decision by tomorrow at the latest, and that if it ended up I did not buy the book I would reimburse her eBay fees. I also said that I had just about talked myself into trying Billpoint, but now I'm confused - I don't want to belabor the point, but I don't understand why she's willing to accept reimbursement of fees via snail mail, but not payment for the item. I said I'm still hoping she'll reconsider allowing me to pay by snail mail, and to please let me know if she does, but regardless I will let her know my decision tomorrow.
It was tempting to add, "Well, if so many buyers are defaulting, maybe you should reconsider your strict payment terms???" but of course I didn't. Again, I respect that it's her right to set whatever TOS she likes, as long as she makes it clear in her listing what they are. And I know it's not my business to tell her her business. I did mention that out of hundreds of purchases, this is the first that required payment by only these methods, which was why I (and probably the others) made the mistake of bidding.
But as I say, now I'm confused - she'll let me mail her a payment to reimburse her fees, but not a payment for the item itself? What's the deal?? Is it just that "sticking to her guns" on her TOS is more important than making the sale?
I'm still hoping she'll see the illogic in this and email me back OK'ing a snail mail payment. But if she doesn't, I'm thinking I will probably go ahead and try Billpoint.

Maybe you have a friend who uses Billpoint or Paypal that would make the payment on your behalf and then you could just give a check or cash to your friend?

She is willing to accept a mailed payment of $1.50 but not the payment for the item because...
She is on the road, travelling. $1.50 in her mailbox isn't going to make much difference to her life; it won't even buy a gallon of gas in most of the U.S. She was hoping to pay for her trip with Billpoint and PayPal payments...money she could move to her checking account and access via ATMs all over the country.
Does it really matter whether or not you understand or approve this seller's desires?
Honest people who make mistakes fix 'em. BillPoint her the money, for crying out loud.
