."Is it your implication that a Pakistani report without a single direct quote from Clinton is more reliable that an American report?"

If its coming from the New York Times or Washington Post--probably

Again, it should be quite clear to all that YES, clinton WAS calling for censorship of speech, just as Bear said in his OP. And that I agreed with.

To deny it is to deny reality.

Former U.S Pres condemns blasphemous cartoons

Islamabad, Feb 17, IRNA
Pakistan-Clinton-Cartoons

Former US President Bill Clinton has condemned publication of blasphemous caricatures in the western media and has urged the concerned countries to convict the publishers.

Talking to newsmen after meeting with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Islamabad on Friday he said he strongly disagreed with the publication of these caricatures depicting the Holy Prophet since they were against any religious or ethical norms.

Clinton said he has no objection on the peaceful demonstrations being held the world over for the conviction of the culprits but it is not time to burn and violence.

He said it is time to promote inter-faith harmony the world over and stand together on the issue.

He said religious convictions of the people should be respected at all costs and no media should be allowed to play with the religious sentiments of people of any faith. .

He said media could criticise any issue including government's, people but no one has right to play with the religious sentiment of any religious faith.

Clinton said people in the United States have also condemned the publication and they are deeply concerned on it.

AGAIN, clinton has no right to speak for ALL American's like that. Many of us see it as a free speech issue and fully support it.

He said they respect Islam as it is growing religion in the United States.

AGAIN, he shouldn't be speaking for all American's here either. Many American's don't see the actions of hundreds of thousands of muslims, murdering others over a stupid cartood as being any reason to 'respect' them at all.

Clinton also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistan to support efforts for controlling the HIV/AIDS through providing cheaper medicines.
He said that Pakistan is 52nd nation with which Clinton Foundation has signed the MoU. To a question he appreciated efforts of Pakistani government for making efforts to combat HIV/AIDS including treatment and educating the people.
He said it is matter of satisfaction that HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Pakistan and Muslim world is lower but it is imperative to make continuous efforts to stop this deadly diseases and create awareness among the people about it. He hoped that the cooperation between the Clinton Foundation and Pakistan government will have a huge positive impact on the world in combating AIDS.
Speaking on the occasion Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz thanked Clinton for extending support to curb the menace of HIV/AIDS in Pakistan and hoped his support will contribute a lot to control the diseases. He said Pakistan is committed to enhance treatment facilities for the AIDS victims and create awareness about this diseases among the masses and hoped that assistance from the Clinton Foundation will go a long way to control this deadly diseases. He said Pakistan is low prevalence country in HIV/AIDS and there are about twenty thousand patients suffering from it but the government is committed to put extra-ordinary efforts to control it.
---------

The profane cartoons, , published in not so famous dailies in such non-political states as Denmark and Japan over recent weeks, are a plot jointly hatched by the US and Britain to challenge the beliefs and sanctities of Muslims. The drawings, deemed as a psychological attempt, have sparked strong protests and demonstrations in the Muslim states.

[i]Yes, and imo, are doing NOTHING but showing the world how crazy they are....what little things cause them to take such drastic measures.....and they're continuing to wish 'DEATH on America'.

Yep....REAL peaceful muslims....NOT at all.

That's the same link Linda, and it contains no actual quote from Clinton. You can't prove anything he actually said by that report. To deny that is to deny reality.

Clinton did not say 'convict' the publishers and there is absolutely no quote of him doing so.

Mr Clinton made his comments in Pakistan where he was launching an HIV/Aids project.

"I strongly disagree with the creation and publication of cartoons that are considered blasphemous by the Muslims around the world," the AFP news agency quotes him as saying.

"I thought it was a mistake."

But he lamented the escalation of differences over the issue.

"I had no objections to Muslims who were demonstrating in a peaceful way their convictions.

"I thought [the cartoons issue] was also a great opportunity which I fear has been squandered to build bridges," AFP reports.

And Profe51 said it best:

Clinton spoke his mind, but by all accounts did NOT call for the conviction or censorship of anybody. Big deal. This is a non-story.
