Can someone tell me how do you steal the photo off someone'else's auction?
I was shopping on Ebay. All the sudden, I come across this auction and saw my photo on there. How I know is because my finger is in the photo! I can't believe this.

It's done with the right click of your mouse. Call up any picture. Place the cursor in the picture and right click. You'll see Save Picture As come up as a menu choice. Save the pic as a bitmap file, convert it with any editing program to a jpg or gif, upload it and you're in business.

I had that same thing happen with a power amplifier I had on the back of my pickup truck. My auction started first and he just swiped my pic. Buyers are sometimes savvy though, his closed at under 200, and mine sold for more than 300! I emailed the crook (I was nice), and he responded "Thanks for the picture, have a blessed day".. grrrrr...

To a moderator,
The same thing is happening to me right now, and the stolen photo is being hosted by Auctionwatch. It still even has my copyright on it!
Any advice please?

In the past 5 years, I have had many pictures stolen. Many more when digital cameras were priced out of site or not available. A few asked. Many didnt. It never bothered me? I was delighted and felt complimented.

Thanks all for the reply. Gee, if I know how easy it is to copy someone-elses photo.
I would have save myself $700 on the digital camera.

If you turn the offending party in to Safe Harbor, eBay will end the auction with the stolen pic.

not really a lot you can do when some one uses your picture in there auction.
Takeing other picture does mis represent there auction I put my name and web address on all my pictures on ebay at least if other use them there will be an ad for me on it.
By the way this isn't as good as it use to be but you might mention in your auction listing you will scan hard copys of pictures for a price or maybe even run a auction for such a service for a price they can send you there hard photos you can email back the copies or send them a web URL to pick up the copies and if they send a SASE you can mail back there original phots.

In my case, the guy that is using the pic is really being unfair. I listed my item as new. (It was) He is listing his as used. The items are over $1000.00 and made of wood, so you know his item can not be the exact duplicate of mine.
I do not take it as a "compliment" . I work hard to get accurate photos to represent my items. If the winner of this auction finds his item doesn't look like the photo, (and there is no way it will) then will he harass me, since my copyright is on the photo?
I will write to ebay about this I guess. I have heard nothing from auctionwatch, even though the photo is hosted through them. I thought they might care more about honesty.

It is very unfair, yes!
But in fairness to AW, they are only the Image Hosting site, and I assume they cannot start checking millions of pictures to make sure they were not stollen.
Now, Ebay, that's a different story, as they help propagate this kind of theft, if they do not help the owner of original pick.
As suggested, probably go to Safe Harbour with your auction No. and the other party's.

No, I don't expect auctionwatch to check all the photos, but when things are reported to them I thought it might be different.
Anyway, I have submitted it to ebay too.
And I didn't mean to butt into this thread.
Thank you for everyone's input.

If its still in your file, delete it and then upload with the same file name something that they would get in trouble with (i.e. a nudie photo since they can't be posted now) OR write on a 3x5 and scan it and upload something to the effect "Buy from the original seller! Check out the real auctions by (insert user name!)" Of course, that is only if they have a bid (photos can't be changed then) and if they are directly linking to your photo. That will probably teach them a better lesson than turning them into safe harbor. I've never had a positive experience yet with safe harbor.

Barrelracer, there is nothing AW can do about someone "stealing" a photo. Most people who steal pictures are right clicking the picture, and saving it to their hard drive to use it. AW or eBay, or any of the picture hosting sites have no control over that.
If the person is actually linking to your picture on AW, then you have some recourse. You can either delete the photo, or replace it with another using the exact same name. This will either remove or change the picture the thief has on their auction. Of course, if you are still using this picture, then those are not the best options.
eBay will generally end the auction of the picture thief, especially if you have your name or copyright on the pic.

Barrelracer, does the auction indicate that the picture is not the same item that they are selling? If it makes it seem like that the one in the pic is the one the buyer will recieve, I would email the bidders and tell them what the story is. What is the seller gonna do, whine to safeharbor?

Meya,
I thought auctionwatch could delete the photo off of their server, since he is not linking to my server. The "stolen" photo is on auctionwatch's server.
BlondeSense,
No, he is acting like the one in my photo is the one he is selling. I have thought about getting a hotmail account or something not connected with ebay and emailing his bidders.
But things like that never work for me and he probably would contact safeharbor and I would get blamed for auction interference.
That's just my luck!
I did hear back from the seller, and he informed me that what he was doing was perfectly legal, there is no copyright laws for the internet. He was very sarcastic and basically told me to shove it.
So if the item meets his reserve I will definetly find a way to contact the high bidder and let them know that the one in the photo is not the one they will be getting.
Thanks to all for your input and suggestions.

You don't need AW to delete the picture, you can do that yourself. Rather than just delete it, upload a replacement that is the EXACT same name, so he gets a nice new picture on his auction.
Make it something interesting like "This seller steals other sellers pictures" or something like that.

barrelracer,
This other seller is full of sxxt to put it bluntly.
Copyright laws do indeed extend to the internet.
This person is a thief, plain and simple.
Turn him in and quickly. Send both auction numbers and your full story to both Safe Harbor and [email protected].
Ebay will end his auction within hours.

Meya,
I don't understand. If my picture is on my server, which is not auctionwatch, and he saved it and put it up on auctionwatch hosting, how will changing my photo change his?
That will work?

Well that is my mistake Barrelracer. Somehow I misunderstood what I read. When you said the picture was being hosted by AW, I thought you meant it was through your account.
Email [email protected] with the details. They will end his auction.

Say your picture is called
mypic.jpg
Okay, go to your image processing software and create another image...something that says "stolen image" in the body...you can use any program that saves it as a .jpg or the same format as the picture.
If you have the original picture on your harddrive, rename it, or dump it, depending on if you need to reuse it.
Then save your new picture as
mypic.jpg
Then upload it to your picture hosting service. It will replace the old one.
That is if they are linking the auction to your picture. If they stole it, then you are SOL
Good luck!

Capriole,
Your advice only works if the thief "links" to the auction page. If he simply right-clicked his mouse on the picture, and then and saved it on his computer, then changing the photo on the host server won't do a diddly-damn.
Your idea is a great one, but most photo thieves don't know enough about computers to insert an image link with HTML. Most simply save the pic and upload to another image host.
I've had my photos stolen too. Mostly high-end audio equipment, that I took the time to photograph extravagantly in order to show every little detail. I wouldn't have minded it the thief had asked ahead of time, but he didn't. His auction went for 30% less than mine, so there was some justice. Still, it ticks a person off....

Hi Barrelracer,
I used to worry about Sellers stealing my photos, so I used to add the following Javascript code to photoprotect my eBay auction descriptions:
<SCRIPT language="JavaScript">
function click(){
if(event.button==2){
alert('PhotoTheft(tm) Tracer is now ON.');
} }
document.onmousedown=click
//-->
</SCRIPT>
It disables the right mouse button on PCs running Internet Explorer. I think it also works with Netscape. It doesn't work on a Mac because their mice have only one button.
(I included the "PhotoTheft Tracer" alert to scare anyone trying to steal your photos into thinking that their activities are being traced.)
I've never caught anyone stealing my photos, so I stopped using it in my auctions.

cpfeifer, I've always wondered how that was done. Do you just insert this code anywhere in your ad's html? Will it crash anyone's computer if they do it?

In spite of his arrogant reply, it IS illegal for someone to use your photo -- it's a violation of copyright -- and the law applies even to the Internet. (Realistically, whether you can do anything about it, is another matter. You could sue them, if you want to spend a bunch of money...)

Get real!!! If it's not copyrighted it's out there for all to see and steal!!! Is it really stealing? I have seen some users place their name on photos. LOL! That one can be easily solved. Place the photo in paintbrush and then edit it with "your" name! HA!

I don't care if people steal any of my pictures; right-click away!! My auctions are accurately represented by my pics, if they use my pic and their item is not the same as my pic, it is their feedback that may suffer. I still
sell my item!
