I just read that the film so far has the second highest opening gross ever, right behind Star Wars Episode 3. Something I found interesting yesterday at our little local theatre in town. First, the 1 p.m. matinee was packed, which it never is, and it was largely packed with older folks. Not the typical crowd you'd expect to see. Maybe they got a senior discount on Sunday or something, but it seemed odd to me.

Profe, it's not exactly an action movie from what I hear in the reviews. I'm not surprised the younger crowd isn't packing the theaters. The religious controversy may have some older people interest as well.
As far as being the second highest grosser, why would that be surprising? Da Vinci This, Da Vinci That, is all I've seen for the past month. This thing has some insane hype.
All the reviews I have seen say it is boring. and talky. Let's see how it does next week. A lot of people will see it once to learn what the fuss is about.

Profe, I agree whole heartedly with you, Tom wasn't the right actor for the job. Our little town theater was packed and it was a good mix of ages. I can't say that I was disappointed with the movie but I was left thinking "Where's the Beef?" I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize

I didn't say the high gross was surprising Arcane, I only mentioned it in passing. Doesn't surprise me one bit.
I didn't find it boring, or talky for that matter. It's a talky book, and the film's makers managed to pare a lot of the talkiness of the book out for the screenplay while still keeping the gist and making the historical intricacies understandable. My wife, who hasn't read the book, has no interest in religious history and even less in christianity, was able to stay interested and understood it quite well. That's something I was interested in seeing as I was pretty skeptical that someone utterly new to the legend of the Templars, Mary Magdalene and the supposed descendants of Jesus could make heads or tails out of the whole thing in a Hollywood movie. In that respect they seem to have been successful. It's not as good as the book, but the movies rarely are. Hanks' performance is dull, but the film has other redeeming aspects in my opinion.

Do any of you remember a few years back when the box office hit of the summer was Ghost Busters? Boy, we've sure come a long way since then, haven't we but they are still making movies with ghosts though, LOL.
