BAGHDAD, Iraq - Imad Talib lived in a Shiite-dominated district for many years until threats by Shiite militiamen forced the Sunni Arab to move across town. Ahmed Khazim left a mostly Sunni suburb for Sadr City, where his Shiite sect forms the majority.
Religiously mixed neighborhoods of this sprawling city are gradually disappearing as sectarian tensions are prompting Shiites and Sunnis to move to areas where they are predominant.
The trend is raising concerns that Baghdad is slowly being transformed into a divided city — with a Shiite-dominated east and mostly Sunni west, separated by the Tigris River that flows through the heart of the capital.

Iraqi casualties remain high despite al-Zarqawi's death

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Deaths among Iraq civilians, police and soldiers dropped slightly last month but the number of wounded rose, indicating little easing of violence since the killing of terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, government figures showed Monday.
The tallies from the defense, interior and health ministries did not specify how many of the deaths and injuries occurred before the June 7 airstrike that killed the al-Qaeda in Iraq leader.
Of the 1,006 Iraqis reported killed in political or sectarian violence last month, 885 were civilians, according to figures obtained by The Associated Press. The overall figure was down from the 1,053 deaths recorded by the three ministries in May.
Despite the dip in deaths, the number of Iraqis wounded rose from 1,426 in May to 1,769 in June.
In all, about 5,062 Iraqis were killed and 6,898 were wounded in the first six months of this year, the figures said.

At Baghdad University, Finals Not the Hardest Test
It's finals time in Iraq. Black-clad gunmen have stormed a dormitory to snatch students from their rooms. Professors fear failing and angering their pupils. Administrators curtailed graduation ceremonies to avoid convening large groups of people into an obvious bombing target. Perhaps nowhere else does the prospect of two months' summer vacation -- for those who can afford it, a chance to flee the country -- bring such unbridled relief.
"Every 30 minutes our families call us to make sure we're all right," said Istabraq Muhammed, 21, an architecture student in her third year at the university. "They are very worried about us."
The morning before Thaer Abdul Naba took his last exam in accounting for oil engineers, a gunfight erupted outside his off-campus dorm in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Bab al-Muadham. For much of the day, he huddled with a group of students in a commons room, away from the windows and the unknown assailants. Unable to study until late at night, he said, he was too tired to concentrate when it was time for the test.
"One of the students was wounded as he was hit with a bullet in his leg. If you go inside the dorm now, you'll find bullet holes and broken windows," said Abdul Naba, 26, a junior. "They even shot the laundry that was hanging outside."

BAGHDAD (AFP) - At least 42 people have been killed by roving bands of masked gunmen who appeared to be targeting Sunnis in the Baghdad neighborhood of Jihad.
A security source said the gunmen were wearing civilian clothes but were masked.
Witnesses said black-clad gunmen they described as Shiite militiamen set up at least two checkpoints Sunday and began stopping vehicles, forcing people out of their cars and shooting them.
"They also went into certain Sunni houses and killed everyone inside," said one witness who declined to be named.
The killings ended when US and Iraqi forces surrounded the area and began a search for the gunmen.
On Saturday night, a car bomb in front of a Shiite mosque wounded at least four people, while on Friday a car bomb explosion near a Sunni mosque in the same neighborhood killed two and wounded three.

Sunni leaders expressed outrage over the killings, and President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, appealed for calm, warning that the nation stood "in front of a dangerous precipice."
Presidential security adviser Wafiq al-Samaraie told Al-Jazeera television that "we are at the gates of civil war" unless "exceptional measures" are taken.
A senior government official, Haidar Majid, contested the police figures, saying late Sunday that only nine people died in Jihad. Police Lt. Mohammed Khayoun insisted the figure of 41 was correct -- with 24 bodies taken to Yarmouk hospital and 17 to the city morgue. There was no way to reconcile the discrepancy.
Regardless, the brazen attack was likely to further enflame Shiite-Sunni tensions and undermine public confidence in Iraq's new unity government. It also raises new questions about the effectiveness of the Iraqi police and army to curb sectarian violence in the capital.
The trouble started about 10 a.m. when several carloads of gunmen drove into the Jihad area along the main road to Baghdad International Airport, police and witnesses said. The gunmen stopped cars, checked passengers' identification cards and shot dead those with Sunni names.
Masked gunmen wearing black clothes roamed the streets, abducting Sunnis whose bodies were found later scattered throughout the religiously mixed neighborhood, an Interior Ministry official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media.
U.S. and Iraqi forces sealed off the area, and residents said American troops using loudspeakers announced a two-day curfew. Black smoke from burning tires wafted through the streets.
Another policeman, Lt. Maitham Abdul-Razzaq, also said 41 bodies had been collected and taken to hospitals. Some Sunni clerics put the death toll at more than 50 in Jihad, a once prosperous neighborhood of handsome villas owned by officials of Saddam Hussein's security services.
Residents contacted by telephone told of gunmen systematically rounding up and massacring Sunni men.
