Roadside bomb leaves brothers dead; thousands flee capital city amid violence
July 26, 2006 3:48 AM
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Two brothers serving in Iraq's police forces were killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle as they returned to their home in southeastern Baghdad, police said.
Elsewhere in the capital, gunmen abducted the Interior Ministry's residence director, Brig. Abdullah Humoud, as he rode in an unmarked car. It was not clear who seized him, police said.
Police also reported several bombings around Iraq that injured a handful of people.
U.S. and Iraqi forces are attempting to quell rising sectarian tensions that have led to the deaths of hundreds in recent weeks.
Seeking to escape that violence, about 2,480 families - or 14,900 people - have fled Baghdad's Dora, Jihad and Abu Ghraib neighborhoods for Wasit province, according to immigration and displacement officials in Kut, about 100 miles southeast of Baghdad.
The escalating violence comes as Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki prepares to address Congress on Wednesday in Washington, where he has gone to shore up the U.S. military commitment in Iraq.

stonecold tell your BULL ROAR TO THIS FAMILY.
Lubbock Family Copes With Loss of Second Son
Lubbock Family Copes With Loss of Second Son
The Velez family is coping with the loss of their second son. Family members were notified Tuesday that 22-year-old Andrew Velez was killed in action in Afghanistan. He is the brother of Freddy Velez who was killed in Iraq in 2004. Freddy was 23-years-old. Father, Roy Velez tells us it's faith, and knowing his boys are in a better place, that keeps him going.
"I can only tell you that it's not easy. It has got to be the most horrific thing that I've ever gone through in my life, and maybe the most exciting thing. When your sons get promoted to heaven, what can I say," said Roy Velez. "I was notified at 12:30 p.m. yesterday (July 25th). The soldier stepped out, and I looked at him until I got up to the door step, and he said we need to talk to your wife also, and I said it's about Andrew and he says lets go inside, and I said no, I don't want to go inside. I said, is my son dead, and he said yes," continued Roy.
"I feel like somebody has taken chains and just raked them through the inside of me, sir. I feel like I am heartless. I'm not angry anymore. If this was destiny, if this was their plan, then so be it. Yesterday (July 25th) was a tremendous shock, and it was like somebody just took a sledge hammer and just hit your heart so hard and knocked me into a deep hole, but today (July 26th), I can see that they are together again as brothers. Their relationship was that of respect and courage and truth and one with out the other wouldn't work, but together now, forever and for eternity, and now it's just my job to get from here to there, and to keep on loving," said Roy.
"I think the only thing that really helps me, that really gets me through this is that somebody out there, somebody in the city of Lubbock, somewhere through our great county is praying me through," added Roy.
That's what Roy and his family ask, to keep his family in prayer. Roy tells us a good friend of Andrew's is bringing him back to the states. That will take around seven to ten days. The family has not set up services yet. We'll let folks know when they do.
You have to be the most disrespectful person on earth. You constantly degrade our troops in action, then this. You take the honorable memories of Andrew and Freddy Velez, two heroes of our time, and you desecrate everything that they died for. The sad thing is, they defended our country so you could have the right to write the crap that you do.
I have to apologize to everyone here, I should be calling you "the dishonorable bigdopa".

Young vets joining jobless lines
Gannett News Service
WASHINGTON -- Young veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are having a harder time finding a job than their peers who didn't serve in the military.
Last year, about one in six veterans between 20 and 24 was jobless, nearly double the rate for nonveterans their age. It was brighter in the second quarter of this year, when young vets had an 11.2 percent jobless rate, but that was still higher than the 8 percent for nonvets their age and more than twice the overall unemployment rate.
Labor and veterans officials are surveying young vets to try to find out why. But experts have some theories:
Some veterans are entering the work force for the first time and aren't adept at explaining their military skills to civilian employers.
Some who saw combat in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, which makes it difficult for them to work and makes employers leery of hiring them.
Permanent jobs that offer middle-class wages and benefits are scarcer these days in some regions.
"With the prestige of a combat veteran, I thought I'd hold a little more weight than the average high school or college graduate," said Jason Seidel of Battle Creek, Mich., 25, who served one year in Iraq during his four-year Army stint. He has spent two fruitless months searching for a decent-paying job that doesn't require a college degree.
"The reality is there's no jobs there at all," he said. "With all the factory cutbacks, everyone's scrambling to get what they can."
Historically, veterans have enjoyed a lower unemployment rate than the population as a whole. Employers gen-
erally want to hire veterans, according to Charles Ciccolella, assistant secretary for veterans employment and training with the Department of Labor.
"They're disciplined and they come to work on time," Ciccolella said. "They've got leadership and management (skills)."
But young vets have had higher unemployment rates than their nonvet peers every year since 1990, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
To help returning vets, the VA offers a three-day workshop called the Transition Assistance Program that includes training in resume writing, interviewing and salary negotiations.
Veterans also can check in with one of 3,500 government-run employment offices across the country that give priority to veterans for job training and placement.
Dustin Dockins of Rockford, Ill., a staff sergeant with the Army Reserve who returned from a year of noncombat duty in Afghanistan in May 2005, found landing a job tougher than he had anticipated.
"There was a lot of stress trying to get it all lined up," said Dockins, who was 25 when he began looking.
After almost three months, he took a civilian job as administrator of an Army Reserve unit in Rockford.
"It's incredibly discouraging, and frankly, it's a betrayal," said labor professor Bob Bruno of the University of Illinois at Chicago. "There's a strong consensus that if you put your life on the line with some kind of service for your country, you should be rewarded with the opportunity to earn the American dream."

Bombings, Shootings Kill 52 in Iraq
By VIJAY JOSHI , 08.01.2006, 05:51 AM
Bombings and shootings across Iraq killed at least 52 people Tuesday, including 24 people in a bus destroyed by a roadside bomb. The attacks further damage the U.S.-backed government's efforts to establish control over the country.
The bus, carrying many Iraqi soldiers, was struck in the northern industrial city of Beiji, killing everyone on board, said Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammed al-Askari.
Police earlier said that 20 Iraqi soldiers were killed on the bus. Al-Askari confirmed that many of the passengers were soldiers, but said he did not know how many. He said the bus was not being escorted by U.S. troops, as earlier believed.
Following the blast, a curfew was imposed in Beiji, 155 miles, north of Baghdad.
In the Karradah neighborhood of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded during morning rush hour near a bank, killing at least 14 people and injuring 37, said police Lt. Col. Abbas Mohammed Salman.
The target was well chosen because Iraqi security forces draw their salaries from the bank on the first day of every month. The blast set several cars on fire in the leafy Shiite neighborhood. Dismembered bodies were strewn on the sidewalk.
