Iraqi rebels kill 19 as US troops seize Al-Qaeda suspects

MORE HORRORS CAUSED BY THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF IRAQ BY BUSH AND GANG!!!
BAGHDAD - Iraqi insurgents killed 13 civilians and six members of the US and Iraqi security forces in attacks around the country on Saturday, as a joint anti-terror operation began to bite in Baghdad.
US troops captured 60 suspected members of a car bomb cell after swooping on a funeral near an area where a 5,000-strong US-Iraqi joint force is conducting a major house-to-house sweep to flush out so-called death squads.
But coalition forces did not have everything their way. Two US soldiers and three of their Iraqi comrades were killed in two roadside bomb attacks in the capital, Iraqi and US military officials said.
A car bomb in the south of the city also killed five civilians and injured 10 more, an interior ministry official told AFP.
The US-led coalition said those captured were thought to be linked to the Sunni extremist movement Al-Qaeda in Iraq, which is inspired by Osama bin Laden's Islamist network and has killed hundreds of civilians.
They were "detained without incident" on Friday after intelligence data led troops to a funeral in Arab Jabur, on the southern edge of Baghdad.
The office of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki confirmed the arrests, saying the alleged Al-Qaeda cell "specialised in manufacturing explosives and car bombs" and was plotting the large-scale slaughter of civilians.
Arab Jabur is a Sunni area close to the restive Dura district, which was this week the focus of a massive joint Iraqi-US operation designed to cordon off flashpoint areas, conduct weapons searches and root out armed gangs.
US forces also announced that soldiers and marines in the restive town of Ramadi had come under attack Saturday from insurgents firing rocket launchers and machine guns but had returned fire and killed 26 enemies without loss.
The defence ministry said its forces had arrested another 12 "terrorists" and detained 80 more suspects, most of them in the mainly Shiite southern city of Basra, over the previous 24 hours.
Since February, when a bomb attack on a Shiite mosque in Samarra triggered a wave of tit-for-tat sectarian killings, Baghdad has been gripped by an urban dirty war being waged between Sunni and Shiite extremist groups.
"Operation Forward Together" has put more than 50,000 Iraqi troops and police and more than 10,000 Americans into the fray in a bid to quell the violence, which on average kills around 50 people every day.
Last week US generals said the violence could push Iraq into civil war.
Observers have warned that this new "Battle of Baghdad" is the last chance for Maliki to impose the authority of his national unity government on rival armed movements and avert the fragmentation of his country.
US-led forces also announced the arrest of "a new senior Al-Qaeda" leader in Iraq who operated from Baiji, 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of the capital, accusing him of sending killers to Baghdad.
Meanwhile, attacks continued around the country.
In Baquba north of the capital, attackers shot dead a police captain as he was heading to work and separately detonated a roadside bomb, wounding seven officers on patrol, police said.
Two civilians were also killed in drive-by shootings in the town.
In Baghdad, five officers were injured by a roadside bomb in the northern Adhamiyah district, an interior ministry official said.
Another blast on a highway in the centre of the city missed a police convoy but wounded three bystanders, he added.
South of the capital, a clan chieftain was murdered by gunmen in Hilla, while a grocer was shot dead in Iskandiriyah, police said.
In Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, suspected Islamic extremists opposed to Western forms of popular entertainment left a bomb in a shop selling videos and cassette tapes, killing two civilians, according to police.
In Amara, a town in the mainly Shiite southern region which suffered greatly under ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's regime, gunmen killed two former members of his Baath party.
One victim, an irrigation engineer, was killed west of the town in a drive-by shooting as he went to work. The second, a teacher, was gunned down by an assassin on a motorcycle, police said.

July deadliest month in Iraq, tallies show
By Edward Wong and Damien Cave The New York Times
Published: August 15, 2006
BAGHDAD More Iraqi civilians appear to have been killed in July than in any other month of the war, according to national and morgue statistics, suggesting that the much-vaunted Baghdad security plan started in June by the new government had failed.
An average of more than 110 Iraqis were killed per day in July, according to figures from Iraq's Health Ministry and the Baghdad morgue. At least 3,438 civilians died violently that month, a 9 percent increase over the total in June and nearly twice as many as in January.
The rising numbers indicate that sectarian violence is spiraling out of control, and reinforce an assertion that many senior Iraqi officials and American military analysts have been making in recent months - that the country is already embroiled in a civil war, with the U.S.-led forces caught between Sunni Arab guerrillas and Shiite militias.
The numbers also provide the first definitive evidence that the Baghdad security plan, started by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki on June 14, has done virtually nothing to quell the violence. The plan, much touted by top Iraqi and U.S. officials at the time, relied on setting up more Iraqi-run checkpoints to stymie insurgent movement.
Those officials have since acknowledged that the plan has fallen far short of its aims, forcing the U.S. military to add soldiers to the capital and back away from proposals for a troop draw- down by the end of the year.
The Baghdad morgue reported receiving 1,855 bodies in July, more than half of the total deaths recorded in the country. The morgue tally for July was an 18 percent increase over June.
The U.S. ambassador said in an interview that Iraq's political leaders had failed to fully use their influence to rein in the soaring violence, and that people associated with the government were stoking the flames of sectarian hatred.
"I think the time has come for these leaders to take responsibility with regards to sectarian violence, to the security of Baghdad at the present time," said the ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad.
The American military in recent weeks has been especially eager to prove that Baghdad can be tamed if American troops are added to the streets and take a more active role - in effect, a repudiation of earlier efforts to turn over security more quickly to Iraqis. The U.S. command has added nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers to Baghdad by extending the tour of a combat brigade.
Under a new security plan aimed at overhauling Maliki's failed efforts, some of the city's most violent southern and western areas are now virtually occupied block-to-block by American and Iraqi forces, with entire neighborhoods transformed into miniature police states after being sealed off by blast walls and concertina wire.
When the July tally for total civilian deaths is added to Iraqi government numbers for earlier months, the total indicates that at least 17,776 Iraqi civilians died violently in the first seven months of this year, or an average of 2,539 per month.
The Health Ministry did not provide figures for people wounded by attacks in Baghdad but said that at least 3,597 Iraqis were injured outside the capital in July, a 25 percent increase over June.
United Nations officials and military analysts say the morgue and ministry numbers almost certainly reflect severe undercounts, caused by the haphazard nature of information in a war zone.
Many casualties in areas outside Baghdad probably never appear in the official count, said Anthony Cordesman, a military analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. That helps explain why fatalities in Baghdad appear to account for such a large percentage of the total number, he said in a recent report.
The UN has been tracking civilian casualty figures by collating numbers from the Health Ministry and Baghdad morgue. Last month, it announced that the Iraqi government's numbers indicated that 3,149 violent deaths had occurred in June, or an average of more than 100 per day.
The statistics indicate that the news media drastically underreports the level of violence in Iraq. The U.S. government and military have declined to release any overall figures on Iraqi civilian casualties or even say whether they are keeping count.
Wide-scale sectarian violence erupted after the Feb. 22 bombing of a sacred Shiite shrine in the town of Samarra and has only gotten worse since, with militias and death squads on both sides of the centuries-old Sunni-Shiite divide engaged in reprisal killings.
In recent weeks, Khalilzad and the top generals have warned that the country could slide into full-blown civil war, especially if the capital continues fragmenting into ethnic or sectarian enclaves controlled by militias, as has been happening for months. Much of the responsibility rests on Iraqi politicians, many of whom have ties to militias, Khalilzad said.

Wounded GIs fighting to land civilian jobs
Saturday, August 12, 2006 By RUSS BYNUM Associated Press Writer
FORT GORDON, Ga. After 18 years in the Army, Staff Sgt. Martin Jones is hunting for a new job — but not by choice.
Jones, 35, of Atlanta planned to complete 20 years of service and retire. That plan was cut short in October after he deployed to help train the Iraqi army. Four roadside bomb explosions over a month left him with hearing loss in both ears, shrapnel in his right side, crushed bones in his left arm and nerve damage to his hand.
Facing a medical discharge and still recovering, Jones traded his fatigues for a dark suit Wednesday to impress private sector and government recruiters at a job fair aimed at giving wounded warriors an edge in entering the work force.
“It’s extremely frightening,” said Jones, who joined the Army after graduating from high school. “It’s been a hard transition, with the reality setting in that life as I knew it is changing.”
LOOKING FOR WORK
With more than 20,238 U.S. soldiers wounded in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army and the Office of the Secretary of Defense have been working to help find civilian jobs for those no longer able to serve.
The job fair at Fort Gordon in Augusta, home to the largest Army hospital in the Southeast, was the sixth the agencies have held since last year.
More than 200 soldiers from Army posts in Georgia and South Carolina attended classes on writing résumés and preparing for job interviews before meeting with recruiters from companies such as IBM Corp. and BellSouth Corp. as well as the CIA, the Treasury Department and other federal agencies.
“Even if we placed just one, to me it would be paying off,” said Karen Hannah, program manager for the series of job fairs. “They’re not used to needing résumés. Throughout their careers, the military told them what to do and where to move to.”
About 85 soldiers have received job offers out of more than 1,000 attending the job fairs, Hannah said.

Snipers Kill 16 Pilgrims in Baghdad
Sunday, August 20, 2006 7:27 AM EDT
The Associated Press
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — Snipers fired on a major Shiite religious procession in Baghdad Sunday, killing at least 16 pilgrims and injuring 230, officials said. Four suspected gunmen were shot dead by police.
The attacks occurred from rooftops along several points of the procession toward the shrine of Imam Moussa Kadhim in north Baghdad. They occurred in three predominantly Sunni districts — Fadhil, Haifa and Saligh — Health Ministry spokesman Qassim Allawi told The Associated Press.
Security forces killed two snipers in Fadhil and two suspected insurgents who tried to mingle with the crowed in the mixed neighborhood of Zafraniyah, police said.
In one neighborhood, security forces and Shiite militias were seen exchanging gunfire with unseen assailants. Gunfire echoed in the streets as people ran for cover.
The government had deployed thousands of troops and banned private vehicles from the streets to prevent attacks during the two-day commemoration marking the death in 799 of Imam Moussa ibn Jaafar al-Kadhim, one of 12 Shiite saints.
Tens of thousands of Shiites participated in the religious procession Sunday, chanting Islamic slogans and wearing white shrouds to symbolize their willingness to die for Islam
"We heed your call, Oh Imam!" the pilgrims sang, beating their chest and flagellating themselves with steel chains in a traditional Shiite expression of grief.
A security cordon was thrown around golden-domed shrine where the imam is buried, and all pilgrims were frisked before entering. Troops posted on rooftops closely watched the devout who waved the green flag of Islam and banners of their tribes in vibrant colors.
Last year, the government said about 1,000 people died during the Imam Kadhim commemoration when rumors of suicide bombers triggered a mass stampede on a bridge across the Tigris River. It was the biggest single day death toll since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
Shiites were prevented from mustering huge crowds at religious ceremonies during Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime. But since Saddam's ouster in 2003, Shiite politicians and religious leaders have encouraged huge turnouts as a demonstration of the majority sect's power.
The ceremonies are taking place during a major U.S.-Iraqi security operation aimed at curbing Sunni-Shiite violence, which threatens the stability of the new government of national unity. Nearly 12,000 U.S. and Iraqi troop reinforcements are coming in to take control of this city of 6 million people neighborhood by neighborhood.
THE GOOD NEWS IS ITS LESS THAN 80 DAYS UNTIL THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS. AMERICANS ARE ALREADY STARTING TO TAKE BACK THEIR COUNTRY. YES!!

Lawyers Killed in Iraq for Defending Women's Rights
Since October 2005, some 38 lawyers in Iraq have been killed, many of whom were defending women's rights. IRIN News, a United Nations humanitarian news and information service, reports that at least 120 lawyers have fled to surrounding countries since January because of the threats to their safety.
Lawyers at special risk for death threats and murder are those who take cases involving violations of Islamic law, such as adultery, so-called honor killings, and cases of women asking for custody of their children. In July, Iraqi lawyer Salah Abdel-Kader was found murdered in his office with a note that read, “This is the price to pay for those who do not follow Islamic laws and defend what is dreadful and dirty,” according to IRIN. He frequently took on cases involving custody disputes and honor killings.
The threat of violence has had a chilling effect on lawyers willing to take these cases. “We are afraid and terrified by such killings, and many of my colleagues have stopped accepting such cases — even if it could bring good money — because our lives could be in serious risk,” said Iraqi lawyer Qusay Ahmed, according to IRIN News.

Ukrainian Peacekeeper Charged with Smuggling Cash from Iraq
Updated: 13:36 MSK, 2 hours 9 minutes ago

The Prosecutor-General’s Office of Ukraine has referred to Ukraine’s southern region military court of appeals a money-smuggling case involving a commander of the Ukrainian contingent in Iraq, Sergei Savchenko.
Savchenko was charged with trying to conceal over 40,000 dollars while going through customs on his way back from Iraq, the press service of the Prosecutor-General’s Office said Tuesday.
On February 9, 2005 at the Nikolayevskiy airport Ukrainian customs seized over $319, 000 illegally transferred from Iraq by Ukrainian peacekeepers. Six months later on August 9, 2006 two of the peacekeepers were charged with cash-smuggling.
One of the peacekeepers, Sergei Sorochan, has already been sentenced, as his case of the illegal transfer of $60,000 had been investigated. Savchenko’s case has been brought to the court only now, after authorities had examined the charges “for a long time”, officials said. Currently authorities are investigating a third case of illegal transfer of $202,000.
Defense ministry officials claim the desire to help their families incited solders to smuggling, Kommersant online daily reports.
In accordance with the Ukrainian penal code solders can be sentenced to as much as seven years in prison.
