Some years ago my hubby took his broken Craftsman hammer back to Sears because they offer a lifetime guarantee. They had none in stock, but promised to have one for him in the next few days. A week later, they still had no hammer. He called to complain and they said they would special order the hammer and have it mailed to our house within two days. A week later, still no hammer. He called to complain again and again they promised to have it mailed right away. To make a long story short, he started receiving a new hammer in the mail every week for about three weeks.

I had included a note with the story about the mistake in credit card billing about the VCR. (I actually was little scared that they would call me up, or prosecute me for theft or something - that's how much my conscience was bothering me.) The store just cashed the check, no comment.

This summer I bought a new machine at a retail computer store. While in line, the salesman was helping me check out, we were talking it up about computers while a lady rung me up. I was not really paying attention to her, just gave her my credit card and signed the receipt (still talking to the salesman). Loaded up and went home. A few weeks later, my credit card bill did not show the correct amount, instead of being charged $1299 for a new machine, I was charged $89 for a film stretcher. I dug out my receipt and saw the mistake. I immediately called up the store and explained to the manager what had happened, he called me back later after investigating, and told me there was an apparent glitch in their system, but too just enjoy my new machine and please come back if I ever need anything else.

I felt I had to post. Last week, my hubby and I were at Wal-mart, and we had our 4 months old with us, so his baby bag was in the cart with the merchandise. Somehow a teething toy got behind the bag and we didn't pay for it at checkout. I realized it was there when I got out to the car, and ran back into the store to return it. I told the door greeter what happened, and that I didn't have time to wait in line again, but asked if he could see it got back into stock. The look of utter surprise on his face was so sad. He thanked me at least three times for my honesty.
Why is this the exception and not the rule, folks?

A similar thing happened to me when I got out to the car and found a bottle of Opcon A that had slipped behind my purse and went back to pay for it. It was really embarrassing how many times they thanked me for coming back and paying for it!
