Northern Ohio is under a high wind warning tonight, with rain turning to freezing rain sometime this evening. The kids are hoping for a snow day tomorrow, and regardless of the weather, I have to go out for a dentist appointment. Bleah...

Michigan is really getting hit. We've had about 10 inches of snow today and are expecting to get at least 4 more. The wind chill is -3 and the snow is mixed with sleet and freezing rain. Absolutely miserable!!

I had to go out this morning to do some Xmas shopping and the town I went to is normally a 30 minute drive but it took me 2 hours to get home. The roads are very slick and people were driving about 5 miles an hour. I just HATE it when that happens. It was an exhausting day (white knuckles from hands gripping steering wheel) and I'm sure glad to finally be home.

Guess we have the best of two worlds here in west Tx. This morning when I went to the post office about 10:30 it was beautiful and around 68 now it is 28 with wind taking it down to around 20. We are supposed to get snow tonight and tomorrow so I'll be sliding to work--oh joy!

Cold! Cold! Cold! north of KC. Wind is blowing about 30 m.p.h. but it quit snowing. Came home early from work but roads weren't too bad EXCEPT for the three blocks from the main road to my house. THAT always gets tricky. I am lucky to live three blocks from the post office!

acooze How beautiful! Oh what i'd give to have the view you have.

These posts about having x-feet of snow are so depressing to me. I live in NYC and pray for blizzards. I love them. Just about every time the newscaster says we are expecting 6-12 inches of snow, we're lucky to get two inches. What a bummer.

Blanche-- I can sure relate to those white knuckles. I thought I was the only one sitting straight up, nose almost touching the windshield, and gripping that steering wheel like no tomorrow. LOL!!!

You should see it now! There's a good foot out there. I'll have to take another shot of it in the morning.

Wow - I had no idea the response that original post would get.

The drifting appears to have been the worst overnight, but I think I may be able to get out of the driveway late this afternoon if I shovel ALOT!

Wouldn't you know it too, someone called with a credit card payment, so I feel obligated to get it out ASAP.

Anyway, thanx for all the posts, they were fun to read and maybe it let the rest of the country know what was going on in Michigan and other parts of the Midwest! Have a nice white day!

8 a.m. in northern Ohio. Our high school is closed due to down power lines, but most other schools here are open. My son was thrilled, he is a Sophmore, my daughter was ticked, the Junior High was open.

We had wind gusts of up to 80mph last night. It was scary, we didn't sleep well at all. Lots of folks don't have power, and there are streets closed from downed trees and power lines. Our electric flickered a few times but stayed on. There was a tree branch in our front yard this morning, but the window wreaths and bows survived. I have to go out later, I imagine I'll see some storm effects.

I was worried about the birds we feed, but have seen two of the four gold finches at the feeder this morning. We had a Tufted Tit-Mouse and a Chickedee there on Sunday. The thought of those tiny gold finches in 50-80 mph winds was frightening.

I think that's my van under there!

Somewhere on the left there should be my driveway. We shoveled it twice yesterday. Guess that was a waste of time

Well in Michigan where I am, we ended up with 18" of snow. I can't get my car out of the driveway right now. Hopefully, later I will be able to, not sure. We are suppose to get more snow tonight, yuck! I guess it is pretty when I look outside, but I really hate winter! Everything is closed here, not even sure if the mail will run today. The plows hasn't even hit our road yet, so they must be doing all the main roads, and highways first. I have to get to the post office today though, cause I couldn't get there yesterday either. Well good luck all, and have a great day!

Well, I gave it my best shot. The street got plowed. But, the street plows buried me in worse. Snowblower smells like wires burning. Won't start. Broke out the shovel. At this rate I might be out by April. I keep hoping a plow driver will knock on the door wanting to earn some money. Usually they are everywhere.

Merry Christmas Ho! Ho! Ho! Argggh.....

Well my packages ship so I don't know what everyone else is doing. Yes it does take longer to get to the post office. About five minutes longer so please don't complain...

There is no way it would take me "just 5 minutes longer" to get anywhere today... I am not sure I could get down the street AT ALL, let alone 'just 5 minutes longer'.

Well-It's about 40 on the coast in Texas and damp and I am feeling very cold right now s-o-o-o I just bought a fur coat. Of course, if my seller is snowed in, it'll probably be back up to 80 when it arrives!

I must be near llama_lady.

-30 wind chill and yesterday we woke up to ice--Ick! Give me snow, but keep the ice!

So, I get my son to the dentist by 8:30, get home and let his mouth get some feeling and went to pay for the Camaro he just bought to bring it home. Oh, by the way, it is a 5 speed and he never learned to drive a stick shift, but no problem mom, I'll learn on the ice rink on the way home. HAH!

So, mom is driving son's camaro, while pouty 18 year old son is driving mom's van! LOL

Later in the day, mom is persuaded to take pouty 18 year old out for driving lessons in new camaro--of course he can't drive the old camaro that is automatic--I mean, what fun is that?!

Call me fearless--or uh, CRAZY?! The kid now knows how to drive a 5 speed on ice! Notice that there isn't a peep about his father who stayed safely and warmly at home! LOL

Good thing because it is supposed to start snowing tonight and tomorrow with 3-5". I love snow! I hate clouds and ice! Come on snow!

(getting the hot chocolate and wood for the fire ready to sit and watch the white stuff come down!--anyone have some marshmallows?)

Took some pics to share but they were all white.

I have a dumb question!

(First let me say, I have only been in snow a few times in my life. Once when I was 12 and once a year ago, but that was just a few little patches on the ground melting in the sun).

So, my question is, when you go to shovel snow, when you actually have the snow on your shovel, is the snow heavy. I think of snow as light, fluffy, airy stuff like cotton candy. Maybe somewhat heavier? Is this wrong?

I am asking because from the sounds of it, shoveling snow is hard work. I know "a pint's a pound the world round" is for water but is snow the same? Is that why shoveling is so hard? Or is shoveling hard because it's so cold out?

I really do envy you with all that pretty snow. Even if it's a little uncomfortable at least you have some contact with nature. And it must be very cozy to be inside and warm.

I did have to put on long pants today, by the way.

Take a gallon of milk and place it on a shovel made from flimsy plastic and lift it from the ground throwing the gallon of milk as far as you can. Repeat this a couple hundred times. That's what it's like. LOL!!

I love the cold. (menapause does that to ya) But I can barely carry my own fat self around let alone lift a gallon of milk on the end of a stick.

It's not fun.

I was going to go into this long thing about how the temperature affects the weight of the snow and if it's colder the snow is drier and lighter, but wet snow is heavier... I like your answer better

edited to make the italics work...

heygrape "I love the cold. (menapause does that to ya)"

I have been thinking of writing a book this winter: "Hot flashes are my friend when heating fuel costs rise!" LOL I'm with you!
BTW, where is a nifty .gif of shoveling? You have to have one somewhere in your repertoire!

also, if heating fuel gets too expensive, you can go out and shovel snow all day and stay toasty warm. The effect works particularly well if you shovel while it's still snowing, so you can clear the driveway once then turn around and do it again!

Actually, here in Iowa, the snow is like cotton candy. About 10" of it now and still coming down. It's not a wet snow, it is light and airy.

Which makes it the worst kind. You shovel it off, the wind blows it back. You shovel it off, the wind blows it back.

You finally get if off, then the plow goes down the street and piles it up in your driveway again. You shovel if off, the wind blows it back.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!

Here is a picture from Michigan of some WET and HEAVY snow. I took this from my upstairs bedroom window overlooking the back pool area. Yep, that's supposed to be a pool. I sure wish I could send this stuff to those of you who want it or miss it.
